CONTEXT
Mechanical metamaterials are architected materials, i.e. they have a rationally designed inner micro-scale structure, that determines the bulk (macro-scale) properties. Mechanical metamaterials open up entirely new design spaces to create high-performing materials and components.
We started a research project to explore mechanical metamaterials for use as compact motion components. Programmed deformation of a metamaterial unit will be used to fine-position objects, e.g. optical elements like lenses or mirrors in complex machines. The project includes collaboration with forefront companies from the Dutch high-tech machine sector.
RESEARCH
The current 2-year Postdoc position focuses on the integration of active elements (micro-actuators) in metamaterial structures to provide the structure with active properties, e.g. deformation or positioning. This is a two-sided challenge. The design challenge is to determine the actuator type and actuator location in the metamaterial design for proper functioning. The manufacturing challenge is how to physically integrate such actuator structures into a 3D metamaterial structure design. The end-goal is to propose workable designs for active metamaterials, and realize and experimentally test these design proposals.
This position is part of a project in which 2 PhD researchers and 1 Postdoc researcher (the currently advertised position) collaborate. The two PhD positions focus on design methods for metamaterial-based motion systems and innovative manufacturing strategies, respectively. We have a high-level laboratory facility, which includes 3D printers, ink-jet printers, 2 photon-polymerization and laser machining, as well as a range of tools for imaging and metrology.
Candidates have a PhD degree on micro-actuators, smart materials, micro-manufacturing, micro-engineering or related fields. Successful candidates will have realized micro-actuators, developed model-based understanding, and performed laboratory experiments. Having knowledge on mechanical metamaterials is an advantage.
Several Dutch high-tech companies take part in this project. The collaboration with a team of fellow researchers and the interactions with the companies will give you the unique opportunity to learn a lot on the applications for which metamaterials have the potential of providing a breakthrough solution. Successful candidates must be able to operate in a team setting and be able to interact with companies.
