Job description

Together with Wageningen University (WUR), the Department of Biotechnology of TU Delft
is implementing the large scale research infrastructure entitled Unlock for research on
microbial communities. Unlock aims for integration of expertise using four complementary

(i) Biodiscovery platform (WUR-Microbiology)

(ii) Modular bioreactor platform (WUR-Environmental Technology)

(iii) Parallel bioreactor platform (TUD Biotechnology)

and the FAIR data platform (WUR Systems and Synthetic biology).

In Delft, a highly automated bioreactor facility will be implemented consisting of forty
bioreactors for detailed dynamic functional analysis of microbial communities from various

The function of Post doc researcher is to conduct experiments in the Unlock infrastructure
in cooperation with other researchers of the research group. The development and
implementation of the experimental procedures and the demonstration of the added value
of standardization and parallelization of bioreactor experiments as envisioned in Unlock are
therewith objectives of the work. Herewith the specific topic of research is not defined
beforehand and will therefor be defined in close cooperation with other Unlock team

Tasks include:
-Development and implementation of the bioreactor cultivation facility in the Delft
  laboratory in close cooperation with the facility manager and the technicians involved in
- Conducting experiments in the Unlock laboratory in cooperation with master and phd
  students. Management of the data generated in the cultivation facility in close cooperation
  with the data management team in Wageningen,
- Contribute to the development of the experimental infrastructure including molecular analysis
  and data management.

The ideal candidate
- has a completed PhD degree on biotechnology, life science and technology,
  environmental engineering, chemical engineering, microbial ecology or equivalent,
- has strong technical skills and affinity with development of bio-process infrastructure,
  preferably with microbial communities,
- has the ability to work in a team that aims for effective implementation of the research
  infrastructure proposed,
- enjoys teaching and supervising students and aims for scientific output in conferences
  and scientific journals,
- is enthusiastic, a strong communicator and outgoing when searching for solutions for
  challenges that will arise in the process of the infrastructure development,
- speaks and writes English fluently and
- has excellent communication and reporting skills.
