Job description

Earth and environmental research relies on reliable field measurements of the state of the Earth and its atmosphere. The development of remote sensing datasets requires fiducial measurements of essential earth and environmental variables in the field.

You will contribute to the design and implementation of field experiments in earth and environmental research, and custom solutions for existing instruments. These experiments take place in The Netherlands and internationally, also outside Europe, and include aspects of the biosphere, hydrosphere and solid earth. Tasks include acquiring and maintaining instrumentation, developing a calibration and maintenance plan and field measurement protocols, quality assurance of measurements, and data archiving and dissemination. Further, we expect you to contribute to project acquisition in fiducial calibration and validation activities, and actively participate in activities of international field data acquisition networks. You also contribute to teaching fieldwork skills, advising students during data acquisition and processing, and open science and data sharing policies.

The GeoScience Laboratory (GSL) at ITC is a unique research facility: it houses a combination of spectroscopy, geophysics and chemistry equipment to support in-depth research of spatial sciences.

GSL has the facilities to carry out spectroscopic and/or analytical measurements on sample material (soil, water, minerals, etc). These measurements can vary from IR-spectral measurements on organic (vegetation) or inorganic (soils, minerals) samples, chemical analysis of water and solid samples to determine element concentrations.

The GeoScience lab provides training for correct sampling and analytical measurements, and usage of equipment with a strong emphasis on the quality control aspects. This can take place before or after a data collection phase of a research project.
