We are looking for researcher to set up an experimental group to complement research and teaching at the Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology (SSB) at Wageningen University & Research (WUR).

What are you going to do:
You will assume leadership of your own group and pursue research in synthetic biology: collaborating with a team of systems biologists, you will engage in integrated experimental-computational research. You will play a role in managing the SSB Laboratory and contribute to the educational efforts of the chair group. This involvement includes the potential to create courses, supervise thesis students, and deliver lectures in English-language MSc and BSc courses in Systems and Synthetic Biology as well as participation with the Wageningen International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) team.

We see promising research opportunities in design-based biology, particularly in the domains of synthetic gene expression control, bacterial or yeast engineering, and synthetic cell development.

Requirements

We are seeking a synthetic biologist to establish and apply methods for constructing and assessing biological systems with specific functionalities. This Tenure Track position includes funding for a PhD position to help launch your group. Our well-equipped analytical and molecular biology laboratory has a dedicated technician to support both routine and research-related activities.

Who are you?
  • you are a researcher with a PhD degree and an internationally proven scientific record in synthetic biology, able to deploy experimental approaches to answer scientific questions;
  • you have experience with genome engineering techniques, strain development and phenotypic characterizations. We will value experience in lab automation and methods for high throughput screening and characterization;
  • you have a keen interest in collaborating with computational groups for the integration of computational and experimental methods;
  • you have clear ideas and plans on how to acquire funding for your research;
  • you have a University Teaching Qualification or are willing to work towards obtaining such a qualification. Experience in teaching activities and education innovation will be valued;
  • you are fluent in English (C1 level);
  • you have a positive mindset, you are enthusiastic, highly motivated and a team player;
  • you have an interest in developing leadership skills.

Conditions of employment

Salary depends on knowledge and experience and will range from a minimum of € 4332,-. to a maximum of € 6737,-. (assistant professor position), based on a full-time working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale 11 - 12).
