Job description

You will contribute to the teaching in a variety of BA and MA programs at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, such as the BA programs in European Studies and the MA programs in European Studies, Research Master European Studies, and Globalisation and Development Studies.
  • Your responsibilities will encompass tutoring, course coordination, lecturing, and supervision of internships and theses.
  • The division of duties will be 60% teaching and management and 40% research, with opportunities for extended research time through external funding.
  • Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute for Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme Politics and Culture in Europe.
  • You are expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding that is related to the faculty’s core research themes.


Maastricht University (UM)


  • You have a PhD degree in international relations, political science, political economy, or another relevant social science discipline with a focus on international institutions.
  • You have strong expertise on international organisations, multilateralism and global governance and focuses (or is willing to focus) on problems of social inequality and diversity.
  • You may, for instance, study the legitimacy, politicization and support for international institutions, the representation of rising powers, other states, and non-governmental actors, or inequalities with regard to the distribution of funds and projects by international institutions. Quantitative methods are a clear asset.
  • You are excited to work in an international, interdisciplinary team to collaborate in relation to teaching and research.
  • Your record of international peer-reviewed academic publications or publications of similar stature is excellent.
  • You are an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and have demonstrated ability in teaching coordination roles, in course development, and in thesis supervision.
  • You have affinity with team-teaching and the teaching philosophy behind our system of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Experience with teaching in international classrooms is preferable.
  • Fluency in English is a prerequisite (Cambridge English Proficiency, level C2, orally and written). Non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch (intermediate level).

What we offer
As Assistant Professor at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht.. In addition, we offer you:
  • Good employment conditions. The position is classified in pay scale according to UFO profile Assistant Professor, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €4332,00 to €5929,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 0,8 - 1,0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
