Job description

The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) constitutes a unique concept in which an integrated approach to Data Science is created by combining the exact sciences of the Eindhoven University of Technology, with the social sciences of Tilburg University. JADS boasts three campuses at Tilburg, Eindhoven and Den Bosch. The JADS Campus at the Mariënburg monastery in Den Bosch revolves around research, education and valorisation on data entrepreneurship. The Den Bosch campus has an opening for a scientific programmer, a professional figure capable of supporting research operations with the development, maintenance, and evolution of scientific computing software as well as project prototypes inherent to (but not limited by) the currently running EU projects at JADS, for example, EU HorizonEurope COMFORTAGE, EU HorizonEurope ONCOSCREEN, and EU ISF MARIT-D.

 

The scientific programmer will support the individual JADS researchers by designing, constructing and rolling out experimental prototypes. The technology readiness level of these prototypes typically resides between TRL-3 and TRL-7. On the one hand, JADS researchers are involved in various national and European research projects in the field of data analysis, data engineering and data entrepreneurship. The research finds its application in areas such as agrofood, health care, manufacturing, services, and crime and safety. On the other hand, the scientific programmer will act as amanuensis during tutorials, and he / she will play a pivotal role in the SAFEGUARD ICAI lab space---being developed jointly with Deloitte b.v.---that students and researchers can experiment with in the application of data science and AI software engineering for the purpose of the next generation of trustworthy compliance and auditing.

Requirements

We are looking for someone with a relevant completed BSc (HBO), MSc (WO) or PDEng degree or demonstrable HBO / WO work or think level:

  • who has affinity with data science research and the relevant tools and services;
  • who is proficient in one or more modern programming languages ​​(C/C++, Python, Java, PHP) and has experience with (No)SQL databases engineering, as well as exchange formats such as XML (including XBRL) or JSON;
  • who has knowledge of machine learning / deep learning and data mining as applied within MLOps pipelines and respective operations;
  • that has experience or is at least familiar with LLMs, ontologies, Linked Data and formats such as RDF and is capable of handling graph-based databases;
  • that has a communicative and accessible attitude and can function well in a team;
  • who is flexible and able to work independently;
  • who is strongly motivated to deliver a usable and maintainable product;
  • with a good command of (possibly) Dutch and (definitely) English.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year with the option to extend.

An appointment for a period of 1 year, with the option to extend with another 3 years contract. The starting date is preferably no later than Jan. 15th, 2024.

The starting salary amounts to a minimum of €3.226 and maximum €3.377 gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO profile of Researcher 4 and salary scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. JADS uses a neutral remuneration system for salary scaling that is based on work experience.

 

JADS offers excellent employment conditions with attention to flexibility and (personal) development and attractive fringe benefits. You are entitled to a vacation allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross annual income. If you work 40 hours per week, you will receive 41 paid days of leave per year. Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance of 30% of their taxable salary if they meet the relevant conditions. The university applies for this allowance on their behalf. JADS will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation.
