Many groups and individuals around the world feel unheard by their governments or their society at large. For example, in the Netherlands, farmers do not feel heard by the government in the nutrient crisis and many students do not feel heard concerning student loans, but the phenomenon of unheard groups is ubiquitous and other examples can be found all around the world. In news coverage about these groups, feeling unheard is often linked to (violent) protest, populist voting, and even conspiratorial thinking. Recent research in the domain of interpersonal interactions indeed shows that feeling unheard as an individual may have important intra- and interpersonal consequences, such as increased perceptions of polarization, reduced open-mindedness and reduced solidarity. But what happens when people feel unheard as a collective or group, such as farmers or queer people, by other groups or collectives, such as the government or the rest of society? The current project aims to gain more insight into this, focusing on the experience, causes and (psychological and behavioral) consequences of feeling (un)heard at a collective level. This will be done by combining insights and methods from (social) psychology, sociology, political and communication sciences, and by using a variety of methods, ranging from interviews to surveys and from diary studies to observational (lab) research. During this project, you will conduct several studies and write a dissertation. We also ask you to spend 10% of your time on teaching.
The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Communication and Cognition. Researchers in our department explore social and cognitive aspects of human interaction through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, interviews, corpus analyses and computational modelling. The research group consists of about 80 researchers covering a broad range of topics relevant for cognition and communication, and this includes approximately 20 PhD students. Core research domains include (in alphabetical order) communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, information visualization, language production, new media design, social media research, and non-verbal communication.
We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a (research) master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as (social) psychology, sociology, communication sciences, or a related field. You should have a strong interest in doing research in general and on this topic in particular. Further, you need to have critical analytical skills, excellent writing skills, and a good command of English and preferably Dutch as well. We expect you to be pro-active and have good organizational skills, and to be able to work and think independently but also collaborate with others. Knowledge of and experience with both (advanced) quantitative and qualitative research and data analytic techniques is a plus, as well as a willingness to further develop these skills. We also expect you to have a professional attitude with a strong commitment to integrity and research ethics.
