Job description

Do you want to pursue an academic career with an emphasis on teaching and the development and coordination of courses and curricula? We are looking for an Assistant Professor of Communication Science who has a media-sociological perspective in research and teaching, an interest in the role of media in our society, and expertise in qualitative research.

The department of Communication Science at Radboud University is looking for an assistant professor to further strengthen its educational programme and its highly reputed research. Your educational responsibilities will be to develop and co-develop, coordinate, and teach courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes, with a focus on the media-sociological perspective in communication science. More concretely, you will participate in and develop courses related to the media landscape, media as societal institutions, and media content. Furthermore, you will be expected to take up a central role in teaching qualitative research to our students. Your methodological expertise should therefore include qualitative research methods. And, of course, you will also supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. We will encourage you to apply for funding to innovate our educational programmes, for example by applying for a Comenius Fellowship or other funds for innovation in education.

Your research should be of high quality and should align with the  Communication and Media research programme of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI). Within this programme, we investigate the potential of mediated communication for improving well-being. We focus on insights into the production, content and reception of communication that can provide a positive contribution to addressing contemporary challenges related to, for example, health, diversity and inclusion, media literacy, sustainability, and politics. Driven by these objectives, we focus on three communication themes: influence (commercial and prosocial communication), information (journalism and news), and entertainment (consumer community and culture). For example, we study how media interventions can make people adopt healthy and sustainable behaviours, support people in handling the abundance of news and other information that is presented to them, and stimulate their moral and emotional development.

Within this position, you will be expected to develop, carry out, and coordinate excellent and innovative teaching in Dutch (70%), as well as performing and publishing high-quality research (30%). You will collaborate with researchers from the Communication and Media research group, with other research groups at BSI, and with external scholars (e.g. in team-grant applications). Lastly, you will also participate in management tasks related to education.

You will be asked to apply for internal or external funding focused on (innovative) education, and you will collaborate with researchers from the Communication and Media research group, with other research groups at BSI, and with external scholars (e.g. in team-grant applications). Lastly, you will also participate in management tasks related to education.

Employer

The teaching part of the position will be embedded in the education programmes of Communication Science. The research part will take place in BSI’s Communication and Media research programme.

Currently, some 450 students are enrolled in the education programmes of Communication Science. The study programmes focus on questions concerning the production, content, uses, and effects of mediated communication, with an emphasis on positive and innovative communication science. We also spend significant time on the professional development of students. Autonomy-supportive teaching is the basic principle of our teaching, and we also encourage staff members to use innovative teaching and assessment methods. Both the Bachelor's and Master's programmes are taught in Dutch.

The Communication and Media group consists of approximately 50-55 staff. Our main objectives are to study the social and psychological mechanisms underlying media use, media processes and media effects, while taking into account the content of the media landscape as well as the economical, technological and sociocultural forces that influence the 21st-century media landscape. We aim to apply these fundamental insights to develop strategies for improving people's well-being. A key role is played by recent developments in digital technology: we study innovative techniques and tools such as artificial intelligence, robotics and virtual reality in order to find ways to empower people to thrive in their multiple roles, for example as consumers, citizens or parents. Driven by these objectives, we focus on three communication themes: influence (commercial and prosocial communication), information (journalism and news), and entertainment (consumer community and culture).

The Behavioural Science Institute is a multidisciplinary research institute and one of the three research institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. Our researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, pedagogical and educational sciences, and communication science. Our mission is to strengthen people through understanding the foundations of human behaviour, by creating synergy between different paradigms and by facilitating craftsmanship, curiosity and connection in academic research. BSI has seven research programmes covering three major research themes, namely human development, connection and health. BSI conducts fundamental as well as applied/translational research and has excellent facilities and support for lab and field research. Moreover, the institute is known for its successful graduate school and strong commitment to open science.
