Research reactors (RRs) comprise various civil and commercial nuclear reactors. Although they are not used for power production, they play a crucial role in the development of nuclear science and technology. Substantial damage to the material’s microstructure and mechanical properties can occur during service. However, there is a limited understanding of the materials' degradation mechanisms, and insufficient materials data (specifically fracture toughness data) are available.
Your role in the project is to improve our current understanding of light alloys corrosion behaviour during operation conditions and evaluate the effectiveness of prevention and mitigation strategies. The research will focus on the performance of the alloys under aqueous environment exposition.
You will be part of the Localised Corrosion and Electrochemistry team in the Materials Science and Engineering department at TU Delft. You will work in close collaboration with NRG and other research partners within the project.
We seek an outstanding experimental researcher with experience in corrosion research of (light) metal alloys and mitigation strategies. We are looking for an enthusiastic and inquisitive researcher who want to develop their know-how and experience in a challenging academic environment.
Applicant must:
Fixed-term contract: 2 years.

Challenge. Change. Impact!
From chip to ship. From machine to human being. From idea to solution. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment and discover its underlying mechanisms, research and education at the ME faculty focusses on fundamental understanding, design, production including application and product improvement, materials, processes and (mechanical) systems.
ME is a dynamic and innovative faculty with high-tech lab facilities and international reach. It’s a large faculty but also versatile, so we can often make unique connections by combining different disciplines. This is reflected in ME’s outstanding, state-of-the-art education, which trains students to become responsible and socially engaged engineers and scientists. We translate our knowledge and insights into solutions to societal issues, contributing to a sustainable society and to the development of prosperity and well-being. That is what unites us in pioneering research, inspiring education and (inter)national cooperation.
