Job description

Excited about sustainable design and 3D printing? Join us to develop innovative bio-waste materials using computational modeling and advanced digital fabrication for eco-friendly structures

Job description
The Department of Biomechanical Engineering (BME) at Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position. We are inviting applications for a PhD candidate with expertise in 3D printing, computational modeling, and biological testing of bio-based materials. This research will focus on the fabrication and experimental testing of novel bio-waste derived materials, specifically targeting their application in sustainable and energy-efficient construction.

The successful candidate will contribute in general to the EIC pathfinder project titled "digital based bio-waste derived meta-PANels Towards A REvolutionary building Identity" (PANTAREI), which aims to explore and validate bio-inspired, multi-functional materials designed from bio-waste. The research will involve advanced 3D printing techniques, biological testing, and the validation of thermal and mechanical properties for real-world applications.

Job requirements
We welcome applications for candidates fulfilling the following criteria:
  • Must meet the entry requirements for PhD enrollment. They must hold a 2nd level Master Degree (120 ECTS + 180 ECTS in a bachelor degree) or a Single Cycle Degree (minimum 300 ECTS), or a comparable university degree (Second Cycle qualification) in biomechnical engineering, mechancial engineering, material science or related fields.
  • Must not have a doctoral degree at the date of their recruitment. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.
  • Are required to be profiecient in the English languague (if not native speaker). English proficiency of short-listed applications shall be assessed during the selection interview.
  • Must have strong expertise in 3D printing technologies.
  • Must have strong background in computational modeling, especially Finite Element Method (FEM), and experience in software such as ABAQUS.
  • Must have high-level programming skills, particularly in Python, for model development and process automation.
  • Should have familiarity in biological testing.
  • Should have knowledge of sustainable materials.

Faculty Mechanical Engineering
From chip to ship. From machine to human being. From idea to solution. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment and discover its underlying mechanisms, research and education at the ME faculty focusses on fundamental understanding, design, production including application and product improvement, materials, processes and (mechanical) systems.

ME is a dynamic and innovative faculty with high-tech lab facilities and international reach. It’s a large faculty but also versatile, so we can often make unique connections by combining different disciplines. This is reflected in ME’s outstanding, state-of-the-art education, which trains students to become responsible and socially engaged engineers and scientists. We translate our knowledge and insights into solutions to societal issues, contributing to a sustainable society and to the development of prosperity and well-being. That is what unites us in pioneering research, inspiring education and (inter)national cooperation.
