Job description

Professors with a teaching focus play a key role in computer science education and research, typically at a ratio of 70% teaching and 30% research.

Assistant professors take a leading role in teaching teams for large bachelor courses, design and deliver advanced master level courses, adopt innovative and adequate teaching methods, and guide bachelor and master students through their (research) thesis projects. They are well aware of modern teaching methods, and can initiate novel use of software solutions for (personalized) learning, student interaction, and grading, to the benefit of both online and on-campus courses. They draw lessons from their teaching experiences, for example by publishing in teaching oriented journals and conferences.

Assistant professors with a teaching focus are active researchers, blending the latest research results in their teaching. They participate in one of the TU Delft computer science sections, for example by (co-)supervising PhD and master students. They assist in writing grant proposals, present their work at international conferences, and (co-)publish in leading journals and conference proceedings. They have a rich network in research and industry in their area of expertise.  

 Responsibilities

1. Initiating, designing, and teaching courses at the bachelor and master levels.

2. Supervising bachelor and master students in individual research projects.

3. Initiating and realizing educational innovation throughout the curriculum.

4. Leveraging opportunities of online / computer-aided learning in on-campus education.

5. Reflecting on and publishing about teaching methods used in educational scientific venues.

6. Contributing as researcher to one of the faculty’s computer science research lines / sections.

7. (Co-)advising PhD students.

8. Participating in the faculty’s organizational activities.

Applications from any research field in computer science are welcome. The faculty will select candidates based on the strength of their research and teaching profile, the educational needs of the faculty, and the strategic fit of their research within the faculty’s long term ambitions. Applicants are advised to identify potential research sections of the two computer science departments of Software Technology and Intelligent Systems that best fit their research interests.

1. Completed PhD in computer science.

2. Demonstrated interest and experience in teaching, student supervision, and educational innovation.

3. Compelling research track record in computer science, evidenced by high impact publications.

4. Leadership skills.

5. Team player with a passion for education.

6. Transparent and effective communication and social skills

7. Excellent command of English.

Experienced candidates targeting the associate professor level are invited to apply as well, and will be considered and evaluated at the rank they apply for.

In addition to a recent resume and cover letter, candidates are requested to submit a vision statement regarding their research and their education with their application (1-2 pages each).     

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Tenure track.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills.

Applicants will participate in the personal development program for tenure track faculty at TU Delft to further develop personal and management skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. Based on individual agreements made at the start of the appointment, the tenure can be granted after a period of maximally five years. Delft University of Technology grants tenure solely on personal performance, and does not have multiple candidates competing for the same tenured position.

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

To handle the substantial increase in enrollments in its Computer Science programs, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science of Delft University of Technology has multiple positions in different disciplines covering education and research in computer science.

The faculty’s main educational programs in computer science include a three-year bachelor programme in Computer Science and Engineering, a two-year master program in Computer Science (with main tracks in Software Technology and Data Science & Technology) and a two-year master program in Embedded Systems. The faculty offers a recently renewed minor in the third bachelor year for non-computer science students of Delft University of Technology in the area of Software Design & Data Science. Through its participation in EdX, the faculty offers a series of highly successful computer science MOOCs. All programmes are lectured in English.

Bachelor courses have enrollments of hundreds of students. Such courses are lectured by a teaching team, including professors, educators, and up to 30 teaching assistants. Master-level courses are typically lectured in smaller groups of up to 100 students, and are closely related to research carried out in the Computer Science Departments. Both the bachelor and the master are concluded with an individual research thesis (of 15 and 45 credit points, respectively).

The faculty’s research in computer science is internationally leading and conducted in the departments of Software Technology and Intelligent Systems. The two departments consist of in total 11 sections, which together are active in all core disciplines of computer science. Furthermore, the faculty conducts research in various themes that crosscut disciplines and other faculties, such as data science, cyber-security, blockchain, and Internet of Things.

To ensure continued high quality research and education, the faculty is in the process of strengthening its Computer Science Teaching Team. Responsibilities of the teaching team include supporting all bachelor-level education, co-teaching selected courses, managing a group of around 150 teaching assistants, supporting educational innovation, and blending on line and on campus education.

Positions are available for full time teachers, assistant professors with a focus on teaching, 6-year PhD students with a focus on teaching, and developers supporting computer science teaching processes. Teaching team members with research responsibilities will also be attached to one of the research sections of the faculty. All teaching staff has the opportunity follow teaching training, leading to a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).
