Job description

The program “Citius, Altius, Sanius” aims to stimulate people of all performance levels to engage in physical activity through sports and fitness to improve their health and performance by providing informative and motivating information using advanced sensor and data science techniques. The program comprises six applied projects and three fundamental projects. For one of the applied projects, entitled “Show your muscles: fitness & strength training” we are looking for two PhD candidates.
Show your muscles: fitness & strength training” concentrates on the reduction of injuries related with strength training through the presentation of adequate feedback on injury risk and training status.

I) PhD position in the project, with its base at the department of Human Movement Sciences, VUA will focus on the identification of biomechanical and physiological parameters, as well as the responsiveness of these parameters to training. It will include the identification of instantaneous as well as longitudinal parameters, both of which will be related to technique, fatigue and long term adaptation in the athlete.

II) PhD position in the project, based at the department of Applied Statistics TU Delft will focus on the development of algorithms for the identification of injury aetiology, including the combination of existing observation tools for injury aetiology analysis and observational data collected on-site from video and equipment data. Whereas the prime application area of this PhD research is sports engineering, we anticipate that fundamental statistical research questions will play an important role in this project. This may lead to wider applicability of the developed methods, for example in the medical sciences.

Experience with experimental research involving human subjects, preferably within a sports setting is required, even as experience in biomechanical modelling.

II) PhD position (TUD)
The candidate possesses an MSc degree in mathematics (specialization statistics or probability theory) or a related discipline in which mathematics, statistics and/or machine learning formed a prominent part. Candidates with a relevant MSc degree combined with data science work experience are also invited to apply. Some experience with epidemiology, statistical modelling and handling / analysis of data sets is advantageous.

For both positions we require very good communication skills and fluently spoken and written English. Both positions include modest teaching duties. Candidates are expected to finish their project with a PhD thesis, and disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at international conferences.
