Full professor in Urban Geography with a focus on The Geography of Everyday Life

Job description

The University of Amsterdam has two chairs in Urban Geography. One of these focuses on the Geography of Everyday Life. In that fieldthe actor (individuals, households, others) takes centre stage for investigating the development of urban spaces and places. The emphasis is on the spatiality of social life, studying the way in which every-day routines, practices, and emotions are both shaped by, and construct urban spaces and places in which these evolve. Whereas the focus is on micro-level behavioural processes, it is recognized that the geography of everyday life is also influenced by global processes affecting mobility, opportunity, and constraints; and by institutional arrangements.

The chair focusing on the Geography of Everyday Life is expected to develop and supervise innovative research and education in this field. We are interested in candidates who can both connect to the activities of existing staff, and are open to innovation with the ambition to develop new avenues of research and research methodologies in and beyond the field.

Candidates should have well-founded ideas about future directions of change regarding the group’s research and teaching agendas. Candidates will be expected to play a leading role in social science debates on urban spaces and places, be interested in theory driven, socially relevant and empirically grounded research in Urban Geography, mostly in international settings.

A more extensive description of the position, its substantive focus as well as its embedding can be found using this link.
