Job description

The USSE has a vacancy for a 0.7 FTE position as a teacher Molecular Pharmacology. Teaching activities will be linked (mainly, but in principle not solely) to the department of Molecular Pharmacology. They will include the course unit Medicines of the Endocrine, Digestive / Respiratory and Cardiovascular System given in the BSc programme Pharmacy. Students will be introduced to the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, basic principles of the immune system, the mode of action of glucocorticosteroids, and mechanisms leading to growth and reproduction will be discussed. Major disorders of the airways such as asthma and COPD will be taught, and cardiovascular regulation and dysregulation such as stable and unstable angina pectoris, heart failure. The teacher will provide the content in plenary lectures, but also problem-based learning will be applied by using Pscribe as a patient based data bank. The teacher will also be involved in the course unit Pharmacology of Chronic Diseases and Ageing, a research oriented MSc elective in the Pharmacy and Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences MSc programmes. The course covers several subjects related to chronic diseases and ageing including oxidative and endoplasmatic reticulum stress; ageing and the inflammatory response (‘inflammageing’); tissue remodelling and regenerative pharmacology; cellular signalling associated with ageing; chronopharmacology; and novel therapeutic approaches. Supervision of Bachelor’s projects, tutor (Vocational training) and Practical courses (Pharmacology Practical, Pharmacology of Chronic Diseases and Ageing) will be also provided by the teacher.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

• a Master’s degree in Pharmacy or Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences; preferably a PhD degree
• experience in teaching on an academic level: giving lectures to Bachelor and Master students
• experience with different teaching methods such as lectures, tutorials, problem-based learning, flipped class room
• team player with a pro-active and flexible attitude
• enthusiasm for pharmaceutical education in an interdisciplinary setting
• good knowledge of written and spoken English
• excellent communication skills
• willing to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

The University of Groningen offers a teaching position (UFO job profile Teacher 3), depending on qualifications and work experience, with a salary from a minimum of € 3,475 up to a maximum of € 4,757 (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time position. In addition to the primary salary the University offers 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. This position is temporary for a period of 12 months, with a possibility for 12 months extension after a positive evaluation.

The preferred starting date is not later than 1 September 2018.
