Job description

• you will be involved in the substantive and language editing of applications for grants and nominations in various academic disciplines, ensuring quality texts and compliance with sponsor guidelines
• you will play an important role in the writing and editing of grant applications and nominations through “information mining” and the writing of (sections of) texts
• you will provide writing coaching to individual researchers
• you will monitor pitfalls and trends to improve success rates.

Additional tasks for the lead editor:
• you will coach the editorial team
• you will monitor the editors’ workload
• you will evaluate, innovate and ensure the quality of the academic editing
• you will collaborate closely with colleagues in the faculties and the talent development team to improve the quality of submissions
• you will participate in university-wide training activities in grant applications and contribute to implementing and improving university policies and procedures.

Requirements

• a university degree, minimum MA/MSc level, some research experience is highly desirable
• a keen interest in the practice and communication of research
• excellent editing and writing skills in English (native speaker competence)
• experience in writing grant applications would be an advantage
• excellent interpersonal skills to work together with academics of various fields and nationalities
• a flexible work attitude, ability to meet tight deadlines and work on multiple assignments at a time with appropriate prioritization
• a professional attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality
• ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
• self-motivated and enthusiastic about learning new tasks and investing in own continuous professional development.

Additional qualifications for the Lead Editor:
• proven experience with editing and writing texts, preferably in an academic environment
• knowledge of grant and nomination processes is desirable
• able to coordinate a small team
• committed to quality assurance and improving our university’s policies and procedures
• organisational sensitivity and the ability to function in an academic environment.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on qualifications and work experience, ranging from € 2,588 per month (scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) up to € 5,405 (scale 12) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in an employees’ pension scheme (UFO profile “Redacteur”). Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants from outside the Netherlands.

Your contract will initially be for 1 year, starting as soon as possible.

We aim to attract 3 or 4 editors (part-time or full-time positions are possible, 2.6 FTE is available in total for the team). One of these positions is for a lead editor, who will oversee the work of the team and liaise with the faculties and talent development network.
