Job description

Which Beam Line Scientist will join our Research & Development department? HollandPTC is looking for Fysica & Informatica leiden? a R&D beam line scientist (full time, 36 hours)

  • Commissioning of the R&D beam-line, developing the R&D infrastructure and control software, purchasing peripheral equipment, performing test experiments.
  • Operating the R&D beam line and participating in the preparation and execution of experiments.
  • Ensuring the quality of experiments, including maintenance and upgrading of the R&D beamline.
  • Assistance of users in the preparation of beam time proposals, evaluation of proposals for feasibility.
  • Scheduling of R&D beam time, preparing set-ups, coordinating logistics of beam-time campaigns, ordering consumables for user experiments.
  • Contributing to data analysis and interpretation, as well as to the publication of results.
  • Co-supervision of PhD students and postdocs carrying out their research at the R&D beam line.
  • Contributing to proposals for the funding of new equipment and commissioning thereof.
  • Promoting the use of the HollandPTC beamline in scientific meetings, workshops, etc.
  • Local responsibility for safety matters.
  • There is the possibility of having beam time to pursue one’s own line of research.

Requirements

  • PhD in experimental physics or a related field, preferably with several years of working experience.
  • Knowledge of particle beams, dosimetry and data analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with network technology, computer programming and scientific software. Familiarity with beamline control software is an advantage.
  • It is considered advantageous if you have experience in the technical aspects of designing and conducting beam line experiments, as well as demonstrated ability to push forward the scientific utilization thereof.
  • Experience in the calculation of treatment plans and/or Monte Carlo simulations are considered advantages.
  • Experience in the conduction of biological and/or preclinical experiments are considered advantages.
  • Expertise in radiation protection is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated record of successful documentation of technical work, preferably including publications in international journals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to technical and scientific excellence as well as timeliness of deliverables.
  • Motivated to collaborate with researchers from other institutes and from different disciplines.
  • Ability and willingness to assist users who are not experts in the technical aspects of the R&D beamline.
  • Good organizational skills and a cooperative, serviceoriented attitude.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including working outside regular office hours (including weekends).
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

Conditions of employment

  • Your contract will be for 36 hours a week, for a definite period of 1 year. You will be appointed at HollandPTC in Delft as a beam line scientist. The Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC) applies; depending on education, qualifications, record and experience, the maximum salary is, at the moment, € 4,917,- (scale 11), however development to scale 12 (€ 5,592,- maximum) is possible. We also offer 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. We provide a commuting allowance. You will have access to a personal budget of 1.55% of the gross salary.
  • The starting date will be agreed with the successful candidate, but can be at short notice.
  • If you are not a Dutch national and start work in the Netherlands, you may be eligible for a tax break, which means that 30% of your wage is paid tax-free.

The Holland Proton Therapy Center (HollandPTC), founded by Erasmus Medical Centre, Leiden University Medical Centre and TU Delft, is an active partnership between these organizations in which they collaborate in the fields of healthcare, education, and groundbreaking research. Department

Research & Development

The R&D department is recruiting a beamline scientist who will be working closely together with research staff, clinical physicists and researchers from the consortium parties. We have a dedicated R&D bunker with horizontal beamline and 20 hours per week for physics, technology, (radio)biology experiments. Furthermore, HollandPTC has preclinical research facilities; a physics, (radio)chemistry and biology lab.
