The position combines teaching and research in the field of International Relations, with an emphasis on globalisation and humanitarian action. In teaching, candidates are expected to provide BA and MA level courses as well as support PhD supervision. Depending on disciplinary background, candidates must be able to contribute to basic introductory courses in areas such as IR, international organisation and / or social science research methodologies; as well as specialized courses within the MA trajectory on international humanitarian action with a specific emphasis on the triangular interrelationship between humanitarian action, conflict and security with preferably an emphasis on Asia.

The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary department. The candidate ideally has a background in International Relations and social sciences and has proven to be a global player vis-à-vis the many stakeholders in the issue areas of interest. We are looking for candidates with a specific interest in international organization, international security architecture and humanitarian action in a geopolitical setting, especially in East Asia. The candidate should bring in an area of contacts in the relevant network of governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations for future research acquisition purposes. The candidate will be a team player and will have demonstrable teaching experience.
The candidate’s qualities are demonstrated by:
• a completed PhD in the area of humanitarian action and security studies
• proven research results through relevant publications
• further research potential and institutional plans supported by a vision on research for the four years
• confirmed experience in academic teaching and training activities, at various levels and in various formats
• track record of acquisition of external research funding
• excellent demonstrable oral and written skills in English
• excellent social and communicative skills and ability to work in groups
• being prepared to learn Dutch within a period of two years.

Fixed-term contract: 48 months.

The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,475 (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) gross per month to a maximum of € 5,405 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday pay and 8.3 end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension scheme for employees. After two years we expect non-Dutch candidates to master the Dutch language to at least CEFR B2 level (for reading and listening). Dutch candidates have a sufficient knowledge of English (CEFR B2/C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking). The University provides language courses in Dutch and English.The appointment will be for a period of four years. This is a tenure position: the decision on tenure will be taken on the basis of a formal assessment after 3 years.

The envisaged starting date for this appointment is 1 September 2018.

The Department of International Relations and International Organisation (IRIO) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen offers a full-time position for an Assistant Professor. The Department of IRIO is committed to top-tier research combined with high quality education. IRIO, with over 50 staff members, provides worldclass, interdisciplinary and international Bachelor and Master degree programmes. The Chair Group on Globalisation Studies and Humanitarian Action, where the position will be located, focuses on the impact of globalisation on all areas of human and institutional interaction with special attention to processes of international/regional security, sustainable development and international humanitarian action. Key driver is the motivation to unveil and analyse the inherent tension between an ever-increasing number of global (normative) agreements and patterns of conduct on the one hand, and grass root needs and domestic arrangements of governance on the other. Africa and Asia are key geographical areas of interest. The interdisciplinary group with links to all faculties in Groningen is engaged in the analysis of decision making and evidence-based programming in international relations, international (non-governmental) organisations, international law and international humanitarian & developmental action.
