Job description

The Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University invites applications for Lecturers in English Literature. We offer two positions, in the range of 0.5 FTE to 0.7 FTE. The position starts August 1, 2018 and will be in the English section of the Department, with all teaching undertaken as part of the English Language and Culture programme of Utrecht University, both at Bachelor and Master level.


We are looking for excellent candidates working in the field of Modern English and American Literature, Literary Aesthetics and Creative Writing, especially for those who specialize in interdisciplinary approaches to English literature from international perspectives. This might include the relationship or comparison of English writing to other world literatures, cultures, and aesthetic practices within the Modern Period. In any event, successful candidates will be expected to have teaching experience in one or more of the above mentioned domains.


With specific regard to the current programme, your teaching obligations may fall within some of the following courses: 'The Writers' Lab', 'Milton to the Millenium: English Literature 1650-2000' and 'Civil War to Civil Rights: American Literature 1865-1965'. Additional teaching areas, depending on your expertise, may include 'Lyric, in Theory and Practice', 'This American Life' and 'Creative Writing'. In addition, you may be invited to contribute to various courses within the Literature Today Master programme.

Requirements

We require:

  • teaching experience in areas relevant to English and American Literature;
  • a finished PhD and publications at an internationally recognised level;
  • experience in teaching at the Bachelor and Master levels;
  • good communication skills;
  • University Teaching Qualification (Dutch Basiskwalificatie Universitair Onderwijs, BKO) or equivalent. Candidates lacking this qualification will be expected to follow the BKO programme once the position becomes permanent.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (0.5 - 0.7 FTE) for one year, with the possibility of becoming permanent . The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €2,588 and €4,757 (scale 10/11 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 % per year. We offer a pension scheme, (partly paid) parental leave, collective insurance schemes and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
