Job description

The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is looking for an Assistant Professor in Islam in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa (1.0 FTE)

  • Facilitate an enhanced understanding of Islam in Africa within contemporary global contexts;
  • Conduct research and teach on the dynamics of Islam in Africa; its many-sided historical forms, geographical differences, and ideological variations;
  • To be actively involved in the various management and teaching committees of the centre, as well as actively seek to acquire research funding.

Requirements

  • A completed PhD within a relevant discipline by August 2018;
  • To be able to demonstrate competence in theoretical and comparative approaches to the academic study of Islam in Africa;
  • To be able to display a detailed understanding of the intrinsic complexity of Islam in Africa, in research, writing, and validated teaching previously conducted;
  • A strong commitment to and demonstrated skills in teaching at the under- and postgraduate level in the area of expertise;
  • An active research agenda that holds the promise of continued funding and publication;
  • Fluent in English, Arabic and an African language;
  • The selected candidate will undertake to learn Dutch within two years of initial appointment.
  • We especially welcome candidates whose work is interdisciplinary, comparative, and expands the centre’s existing strengths.

Conditions of employment

We offer a 38 hours per week, position for two years from 1 September 2018, with the possibility of a permanent position thereafter, based on need, funding and performance. The appointment will proceed in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The salary level ranges from €2,588 to €4,757 gross per month based on a fulltime employment (pay scale 10 or 11), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

University Teaching Qualification. Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the UTQ. If the successful applicant does not already  possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/ she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.

The African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. It has an extensive library that is open to the general public. The ASCL is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University.
