The Business Economics Group (BEC) at Wageningen University (NL) group starts a PhD project on assessing the potentials of microbial applications in the food supply chain. You will investigate the behavioural-economic drivers and barriers for novel microbial processes/products and will estimate the associated sustainability impacts on the food supply chain. You will use various experimental, econometric and mathematical programming methods. The project should result in publishable research output.

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

- A MSc in the area of (applied) economics or sustainability sciences
- Outstanding analytical skills
- An interest in quantitative sustainability assessment
- Excellent oral and written communication in English, and good social communication skills
- Experience with choice experiments is an advantage
Conditions of employment
Conditions:
In principle this is a 48 month PhD position. We offer you a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended with 30 months if you perform well. Salary will increase from € 2,266 gross per month in the first year up to € 2,972 in the last year, based on full-time employment (38 hours a week). Next to a variety of secundairy labour conditions, we offer a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-the-year bonus of 8.3% of your annual salary.

Background:According to the latest projections of the United Nations, the total population will rise to 9.8 billion by 2050. The supply of enough food to feed this population is a major concern. Additionally, agricultural production is associated with various environmental problems. Sustainable food production therefore is high on the political agendas. The application of microbes is seen as a novel and promising development to increase sustainable food production. However, currently, the expected consumer acceptance and sustainability impacts on the food supply chain are unknown.

The mission of BEC is to analyse and support decision making of actors in food supply chains by analysing and evaluating their risks and their economic, environmental and social performance.
