Job description

The 4 PhD positions are part of CriticalMaaS, a research program funded by the European Research Council.

CriticalMaaS is devoted to the development and testing of theories and models to explain and predict the performance of (potentially fully-automated) flexible on-demand transport services offered by Mobility as a Service providers at strategic, tactical and real-time operation levels by identifying key determinants of level-of-service, including the consideration of travel demand patterns, traveller and operator behavioural preferences, service design and fleet allocation and management with a special focus on system-wide accessibility, efficiency and equity effects.

The PhD projects will

(1) develop dynamic network models for on-demand services

(2) identify the determinants of MaaS users and related market segments

(3) develop operational strategies and the interaction between service suppliers and the service platform

(4) determine the dynamics of the market evolution and adoption of MaaS and related transition phases

Key research questions include: what is the potential market share of MaaS under different conditions? What are the economies of scale of on-demand services? How will they co-exist with conventional public transport? Will they compete or complement each other? What is the optimal resource allocation for hybrid public transport operations? How willing are people to share their rides?

The PhD researchers will work together in the CriticalMaaS project team and will collaborate with other colleagues in the Smart Public Transport Lab: http://smartptlab.tudelft.nl/
