Job description

You will become part of an exciting, innovative, and interdisciplinary research group that examines The role of the father in child development and the intergenerational transmission of inequality. The key objective of the overall project is to provide novel insights into the questions whether, why, and in what ways, fathers influence their children’s social, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive outcomes.

Project and job description
Policies create conditions which may mitigate or strengthen social inequality. The role that fathers play in the development of their children’s diverging destinies may therefore be influenced by country context, in particular the extent to which policies address inequity in the resources families have to properly develop their children’s potential. When public support is offered in money rather than in kind, families use it to buy help or to augment the family budget while providing care directly. This tradeoff is likely different in families with different socioeconomic circumstances. For example, the less compensated parental leave, the more it produces polarized behaviours among parents, mostly based on social class/education. In the absence of generous paid paternity leave, mainly high SES fathers are capable to take short periods of (part-time) leave, which suggest that the development of inequalities through fathers’ parenting practices will be stronger.
In this post-doc project, the candidate will in compare fathers’ influences on their children’s development across countries in order to increase our understanding of the extent to which and the reason why there are cross-national differences in the development of inequalities through fathers’ parenting practices.
To answer these research questions, data from the Millennium Cohort study, the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children and the Rotterdam birth cohort study Generation R can be used. The candidate, however, is not restricted in using these or only these datasets.
Research tasks:
• Conducting research within the project The role of the father in child development and the intergenerational transmission of         inequality.
• Presenting research results at international conferences and publishing articles in international peer reviewed journals.
• Assisting in the organisation of workshops and other knowledge sharing activities.
