Job description

The Institute BISS will be the UM platform for translational data-driven research & education joining expertise and staff from all six UM faculties, in the context of the Brightlands Smart Services Campus ecosystem.

BISS will be governed by a management team based on collaborative leadership and its members will be senior scientists and the managing director. In this management team each faculty will be represented by a senior scientist (PI), leading a group of academics. For these principal investigators the shared responsibility focusses on joint development and implementation of the collaborative scientific strategy, direction and content, as on the number of interactions and level of involvement of scientific staff from their home faculty, the multidisciplinary and team aspects. BISS will be supported by a team of professionals with administrative, financial, legal and organisational tasks. The BISS support team will consist of 5 to 8 FTE (more in headcount) and BISS as a whole is to grow towards 30 FTE.

The Managing Director is to bring strong organizational management and leadership. The MD is responsible for the operational activities necessary to operate as a centre of excellence and is to oversee and enhance the full set of strategic objectives of BISS as an institute. Focus will be on operations, availability of support and facilities, financial viability, securing agreements and conditions, link with campus and (potential) research partners (companies, institutions, governments etc). Acquisition is a shared responsibility with a substantial role for both the PI’s and the MD. The MD will address possible imbalances within the BISS MT and if necessary beyond.

In the day-to-day activities the MD is recognized as the point of contact for all partners, also fulfilling a leadership role to inspire BISS personnel and partners, showing engagement in the activities that are key to reach the strategic objectives of BISS.

You have a master degree, preferably hold a PhD, and have affinity with the university work culture, the business community and government institutions and the field of data science. You have extensive experience in complex political-administrative organizations and you are a worthy discussion partner for all stakeholders in the field. You are a team player and able to gain benefits from complementary skills and responsibilities. Making choices and setting the right priorities are important. In addition, you have a well-developed antenna to deal with internal and external developments and you get them on the agenda. You have a good and large external network in the aforementioned areas or you may be able to develop this network quickly because of experience and knowledge. Your management style is coaching and facilitating, not steering or controlling. You are able to oversee the entire field of work, identify problems and opportunities in time and make connections.

Conditions of employment

Salary will be determined in accordance with the weight of the function and depending on the experience of the candidate. In addition there is an 8% holiday and 8.3% year-end allowance.

Located in Heerlen, the Brightlands Smart Services Campus is the centre of new developments in the fields of Data Science, Internet of Things and Smart Services in the Euregio. Within the Brightlands Smart Services Campus an ecosystem is created joining business, governments and knowledge institutes. At the start Maastricht University, the Open University and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences joined in one institute offering both research and education. After this starting phase we are ready for a new structure at the quickly developing campus in which each knowledge institute manages its own structure whilst still collaborating on project base.

The Business Intelligence and Smart Services (BISS) Institute will continue as the UM platform for translational data-driven research & education joining expertise and staff from all six UM faculties, in the context of the Brightlands Smart Services Campus ecosystem. It offers a flexible, agile & state-of-the-art Living Lab environment that nurtures collective intelligence & integrative thinking. The multidisciplinary activities will be setup as projects (case by case), partner agreements (structural, 1-1) and programs (structural, subject driven, multiple partners), featuring innovation, collaboration, co-creation, awareness and solutions.
