Job description

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) invites applications for a Geo-informatician in the newly established Computational Support team. This team is part of the Lab & Infrastructure unit that supports our four scientific departments. The Geo-informatician will mainly support the Theoretical and Computational Ecology department (TCE) and the department of Ecosystem and Landscape Dynamics (ELD).

IBED’s research in ecology, evolution, earth and environmental sciences generates and utilizes a large variety of exciting spatial data. To ensure that we can exploit this wealth of data to its full extent, we are recruiting a Geo-informatician. We are looking for an inventive, enthusiastic, ambitious and responsible colleague, who will be able to support the ongoing research at IBED through processing, management and knowledge transfer of geodata. Important tasks will be:

  • structuring and managing geospatial data that are used in research;
  • processing of large spatial data sets (vector, raster as well as point data sets);
  • development of geospatial analysis workflows;
  • development of geospatial visualizations od visualization tools;
  • exploring and testing novel geospatial analysis techniques;
  • supporting ongoing research with geospatial analyses and geostatistics;
  • organizing and transferring knowledge on geospatial data and analyses, e.g. via written tutorials or hands-on training.

Requirements

  • BSc or MSc in Informatics, Data Science, Computing, GIS, Biology or a related field with preferably 1-2 years of experience;
  • familiarity with contemporary GIS software and an interpreted language (e.g. R or Python) is essential;
  • the candidate must be able to work independently on her or his tasks and be able to collaborate well with colleagues within IBED as well as the wider academic community. Good communication skills are essential for this position;
  • fluent in English and adequate knowledge of Dutch or the willingness to learn the Dutch language within two years.

Experience with the use of large geospatial datasets, familiarity with PostgreSQL/PostGIS (or other geospatial database systems) and R is a plus.

The initial full-time appointment (38 hours per week) is offered for a period of one year. Part-time work is an option. Upon a positive evaluation of your performance you will subsequently be offered a permanent position. The gross monthly salary is in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €2,763 up to a maximum of €4,166 (salary scale 9 or 10), based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications and on the number of years of relevant professional experience, and will be supplemented with an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable including a salary increase of 2.6% as from 1 February 2019.

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) is one of eight research institutes of the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. The institute covers a wide range of subjects in both fundamental and applied research. Our scientific studies aim at a better understanding of the dynamics of ecosystems at all relevant levels, from genes to climate change, using a truly multi-disciplinary approach.
