Job description

We are looking for a PhD student for a four year research project concerning pathogenesis and treatment of portal vein thrombosis, which is a common but poorly understood complication of chronic liver disease. In this project, supported by the Dutch Thrombosis Foundation, we aim to 1) assess risk factors for development of portal vein thrombosis in humans, 2) study the composition of human portal vein thrombi, and 3) test potential treatment strategies in a mouse model of portal vein thrombosis. The project combines collection of patient samples, biochemical analyses of these samples, and execution of animal experiments. This project will be performed in collaboration with the Liver Units of King’s College Hospital in London, and Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, Spain and the PhD candidate is expected to spend time in one or both of these institutions during the project.

Requirements

- You have a Master's degree in Medicine, (Medical) Biology, Life Sciences, Pharmacy or equivalent.
- You have good analytical skills and are able to work independently.
- You are cooperative, and you have good communicative and organization skills.
- You have good oral and written expression skills in the English language.
- You like to work in a multidisciplinary team.
- You are highly motivated and an enthusiastic contribution is expected.
- Experience with laboratory animals is recommended.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Behaviour’ is required.

Conditions of employment

It concerns a full-time appointment (36 h/week) for a period of four years to be concluded with a PhD examination. After one year, the performance of the candidate will be evaluated to decide whether there is sufficient progress to expect a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the coming three years.

Your salary is € 2.279,- gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 2.919,- gross per month in the last year (scale PhD). In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and a development budget. The terms of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centers (CAO-UMC).

The surgical research laboratory is a multidisciplinary research unit directly affiliated with the department of surgery. We train biochemists and physicians in research driven by clinical observations. The laboratory is equipped for biochemical and cell biological analyses of in vitro studies as well as samples from animal studies or patients. One of the research lines led by Prof. Dr. Ton Lisman concerns pathogenesis and treatment of bleeding and thrombosis in patients with liver disease.
