Job description

Creating new and better materials and products as well as the machinery required to make these products is the focus of the department of Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces & Systems (MS3) of the Engineering Technology faculty at the University of Twente. Manufacturing new products and/or developing new processes requires a profound scientific understanding of the materials and their interactions. The department addresses and teaches the scientific and engineering aspects of the strongly related “triangle” of (i) material (behavior), (ii) production and (iii) products, where ultimately the performance of all aspects is of crucial importance. Our research concentrates on the development of experimentally validated models of the underlying physical phenomena occurring in the materials during the various stages in the life cycle of a product/part ranging from its design to its manufacturing, use and disposal phase. Application areas include aerospace and automotive amongst others. MS3 is one of the pillars in the BSc and MSc programs in Mechanical Engineering and contributes also to the programs of Industrial Design Engineering.

Teaching: You will support the materials science education within the department. At the beginning of the appointment there will be strong emphasis on education within the newly developed BSc Mechanical Engineering program in co-operation with the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam. This comprises predominantly organizing and teaching of relevant courses in the Bachelor phase, although contributions in the Master phase will be welcome as well. Furthermore, smaller teaching activities are required such as guest lectures, tutoring and helping out in examinations of student projects. Additionally, you will be responsible for the supervision of BSc- and MSc-students.

Research: The MS3 department covers a broad research portfolio where materials play an essential role. Much of the research performed increasingly requires a deeper understanding of the underlying material behaviour to fully cover the phenomena observed. Enhanced understanding of material behaviour at various length scales is essential to better model the mechanical and functional behaviour of complex materials, including steel and light weight alloys. Forming behaviour, laser processing, additive manufacturing, wear and predictive maintenance are important aspects in this respect. You should be at the heart of these developments providing adequate microstructural modelling and experimental activities in co-operation with the various research chairs involved to further strengthen the MS3 research.

You are an enthusiastic independent researcher who can identify relevant research questions in this context, plan and execute theoretical as well as experimental research and publish the findings in renowned journals. Co-operation with adjoining chairs within and outside MS3 is highly encouraged. You will acquire external funding (European, national, or corporate/institutional) for junior researchers (PDEng, PhD and Postdoc positions), for whom you will provide daily supervision. Furthermore, you should have a record of published papers in international refereed journals.
