Job description

The chair group Education and Learning Sciences (ELS) is looking for a skills teacher Scientific Writing Skills who will be working in the domain of the life sciences (0.4 fte). The skills-teacher will teach scientific writing skills in various BSc and MSc WUR (Wageningen University and Research) study programmes. Modules on scientific writing skills are in most cases part of bigger disciplinary courses. The teacher will teach the basic skills (including text structure, grammar, spelling and writing styles) via tutorials and help students apply their writing knowledge and skills into a writing assignment for the main course. Courses use different writing formats, mainly reports and scientific papers, but also essays, blogs and newspaper articles. Most courses are taught in English, a few in Dutch. Student groups vary in size from 25 to 125 students.
The skills-teacher will be responsible for:
  • Teaching tutorials on scientific writing skills in various BSc- and MSc programmes including preparation and quality assurance;
  • Assessment of students' writing assignments in various forms (reports, papers, essays etc.);
  • Cooperation with respective course coordinators and other ELS staff involved in skills education to be able to effectivelyimplement scientific writing skills in existing disciplinary courses.

Requirements

Candidates are expected to fulfil the following requirements:
  • PhD degree in the life sciences domain, and/or an MSc degree with explicit academic writing experience;
  • Near-native or native in both English and Dutch speaking and writing;
  • Affinity with linguistics;
  • Broad interest in the life sciences domain, and ability to quickly get an overview of actual scientific developments and writing styles in various disciplines within the life sciences;
  • Experience in teaching university students at both BSc and MSc level;
  • Enthusiastic teacher, comfortable in teaching large groups of students as well as giving one-to-one feedback;
  • Flexible, cooperative attitude, ability to 'walk in another's shoes'.
    Editing or reviewing experience for a scientific journal is appreciated.
    Candidates who are flexible in their working days are preferred.

Conditions of employment

We offer you a 0.4 fte (15,2 hours per week) temporary position for one year with possible extension. Starting preferably between February 1 and April 1, 2019. Gross Salary: min. €2.640, max. €4.166 per month (scale 10) based on fullti,e position (38 hours). In addition we offer a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-the-year bonus of 8,3%.
