The Undergraduate School of Science and Engineering has a vacancy for a teaching position in the BSc programme in Astronomy. Building up research skills, computer skills and learning how to observe are important aspects of the bachelor education in Astronomy. We are expanding the number of staff that are responsible for the content, maintenance, operation, safety, and coordination of these practical astronomy courses. We are looking for a new colleague to join in these activities, and to help in the preparation of the further development of the computer practical and observing-related courses and to prepare them for the future.

The duties of the Lecturer will include:
- coordination of all practical courses in the astronomy programmes (including master courses)
- technical involvement in realizing the Dark Sky Park Lauwersmeer Observatory
- technical involvement in operations of the Blaauw Observatory
- involvement in the course Introduction to Programming and Computational Methods for Astronomy
- supervision of students and teaching assistants on practical courses.

Teaching at the Faculty of Science and Engineering is research-infused. For this reason, you will be affiliated with the research group Sterrenkunde within the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute.

Requirements

What we expect of you:
- a PhD degree in astronomy
- enthusiasm for and experience in teaching at the University level
- technical knowhow of observing and observing equipment
- experience in programming for astronomy, especially in Python
- proficiency in English at the C2 level
- willingness to learn the Dutch language
- cross-cultural sensitivity and strong communication skills
- ability to work independently and to take initiative
- a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) or the willingness to obtain this within a year.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

What we have to offer:
• a salary with a minimum of € 3,545 up to a maximum of € 4,852 gross per month (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) for a full-time position
• an employment for 1.0 FTE
• in addition to the salary we offer a 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
• an appointment for initially one year; after a positive evaluation during the Result and Development Interview, an extension with another year is possible
• for this position, the following UFO job profile applies: Teacher 3.
