Job description

We are looking for an innovative, dynamic and inspiring scholar in the field of Meteorology to join our faculty and lead the Meteorology section within the Meteorology and Air Quality Group (MAQ) at Wageningen University & Research (0.8 - 1.0 fte).

The mission of the Chair of Meteorology is to advance knowledge and educate students on the fundamental principles and applications of weather and climate science, and to relate those to the core themes of Wageningen University & Research (WUR). The Meteorology section focuses on investigating the atmospheric boundary layer and its interaction with land and water surfaces. With a history of more than 100 years, the section's interests focus on providing sound answers to current and future societal demands. Examples are the influence of atmosphere-land processes on extreme weather events, the improvement of weather prediction capabilities for solar and wind energy, the understanding and representation of the modification of atmospheric processes by changes in climate and natural/urban landscapes, and the influence of weather and climate on food production. To achieve these aims it is essential to obtain a solid understanding of the underlying atmospheric processes. This fundamental knowledge is transferred to improve weather and climate model representations. Furthermore, this know-how enables the group to play an active role in meteorological aspects that influence air quality, urban/rural environments, and agrometeorological research. To enable its research, the group develops and maintains a complete hierarchy of numerical atmospheric models, as well as an innovative observational infrastructure.

The staff members teach courses at BSc and MSc level. They strongly support innovative educational methods to facilitate the transfer of up-to-date knowledge and skills from MAQ's research topics to BSc and MSc levels. This innovation includes the development of user-friendly software such as conceptual land-atmosphere models, instruction/knowledge clips and the continuous renewal of course manuals, teaching methods and didactical processes.

As Chair of Meteorology, together with the Chair of Air Quality, you will lead the Meteorology and Air Quality (MAQ) group. You will support the group's research ambitions by further strengthening its position in national and international networks, by managing its internal processes and relations in a constructive and cooperative way, and by strengthening established research lines and bringing in novel ideas. In addition, you will play an active role in education at the undergraduate and graduate level. You will also give new impulses to further develop the contents of its courses, its teaching methods, and the coherence of the education programmes in which it takes part. You will ensure the group provides a supportive working environment to academics at a range of career levels. Strengthening the acquisition of external funding for research, and attracting PhD candidates are key elements of your responsibility.
