Job description

Job description

Voltage quality in each network is influenced by several aspects, including the load and generation mixtures and operating profiles as well as the network structure. In the recent years, and years to come, power systems are undergoing an 'energy transition' - with the increase of renewable generation as one of the most significant aspects. Renewable generation is very often inverter-interfaced (with the exception of hydro generators), and behaves differently in comparison with conventional (directly coupled synchronous) generators.

The main question of this PhD project is: what is the expected influence of the reduction of conventional generation on the quality of voltage supply in the Netherlands? This question can further be divided into sub-questions:
  • Frequency and propagation of voltage dips,
  • Slow voltage variations, rapid voltage changes, flicker, waveform distortion and unbalance,
  • Influence of network contingencies (e.g. N-2), methodology for calculating the short-circuit levels,
  • Influence of fault-ride through characteristics of inverter-interfaced generators
  • Mitigation methods for possible problems
  • Considerations for adapting existing regulation (connection requirements, device requirements etc.).

    Requirements

We are looking for candidates with a deep knowledge in Electrical Power Systems, preferably with an interest in Power Quality. Successful candidates should have good writing and documentation skills, excellent analytical and research capabilities and excellent communication skills. They must be able to organize their own work very well and find and pursue their goals independently.

The intermediate results will be discussed (at least) bi-yearly with a group of experts - branch organizations of Network Operators and Producers.

    Job requirements

We are looking for candidates with a MSc diploma in Electrical Engineering, and with good skills in Matlab or comparable programming tools. Knowledge of Power System analysis software (e.g. Digsilent Power Factory) is a pre. Due to the high need to analyze documentation specific for the Netherlands, knowledge of Dutch knowledge is also a pre.

    Conditions of employment

We offer a challenging job in an ambitious research group through a fixed-term appointment for a period of 4 years. The research is intended to lead to the attainment of a PhD degree. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions. The salary starts at € 2266,- per month (gross) in the first year, increasing up to € 2897,- per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover, an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation is available. The university offers an attractive package of fringe benefits such as excellent technical infrastructure, child care, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities. TU/e also provides opportunities for personal development by offering every PhD student a series of courses in the PROOF program as an addition to your scientific education.
