The ideal candidate should have a particular focus on the Economic and Social History of the modern world, with special interest in one or two of the following fields: global history environmental questions, problems of sustainability, population & health history, inequalities; and it is highly recommended to have also knowledge of social scientific research methods and the analysis of big data. We are looking for an enthusiastic and versatile colleague who is able to contribute to teaching within the degree programme and research in the field of Economic & Social History from a broad perspective, based on the candidate’s acquired knowledge and skills. In addition, the candidate should be able to adopt a cooperative and interdisciplinary stance within the Department.

The candidate should be capable of attracting students to the degree programme in History through demonstrating a combination of a welcoming attitude and inspiring teaching methods.

Specific tasks:
- teaching course units in the field of Economic and Social History within the bachelor’s degree programme in History and the master’s degree History Today
- teaching course units in the field of Quantitative Methods, Digital Humanities
- teaching course units within the framework of the interdisciplinary research course units in the degree programme in Modern History and the research master programme Modern History and International Relations
- conducting research at a recognized level in the above-mentioned field
- external grant acquisition
- supervising bachelor's and master's theses in the above-mentioned field
- performing administrative and organisational duties.

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for a candidate who has a PhD in the field of economic and social history or historical social sciences.

In the area of teaching, the ideal candidate:
- has at least three years of teaching experience in the field at various levels
- has gained the University Teaching Qualification or is prepared to do so within a year
- is an excellent teacher, as demonstrated by positive teaching evaluations
- is demonstrably able to make concrete contributions to the development of course units, partly by actively linking research to teaching.

In the area of research, the ideal candidate:
- has excellent research qualities, as evidenced by a relevant record of (inter) national leading journals, books and presentations at renowned conferences
- is able to set up his/her own research line and publish within it, dovetailing with the profile of the research institute
- has international experience and an international network
- is experienced in PhD supervision or is prepared to play an active role in this.

In the area of management and organization, the ideal candidate:
- has a good command of English and Dutch or is willing to learn Dutch within two years. After two years, non-Dutch candidates must be proficient in Dutch at, at the least, CEFR B2 level (for reading and listening). Dutch candidates have a sufficient knowledge of English (CEFR B2/C1 level for reading, listening, writing and speaking). The University provides language courses in both Dutch and English
- is able to make a constructive contribution to the interdisciplinary collaboration and friendly atmosphere within the Department
- has demonstrable administrative and organization skills.

Fixed-term contract: 48/60 months.

The University of Groningen is offering a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,637 (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) and € 5,656 (scale 12, Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time position as Assistant Professor, excluding an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for staff members.
