Aim of the projectThe Edema-Steernberg Foundation aims to stimulate scientific research and exchange knowledge on social determinants of dietary habits. It recently funded six interdisciplinary research projects at Wageningen University which aim to answer the question 'Why we eat what we eat' for different target groups: pregnant women, adolescents, children, people living with diabetes type 2 and the general population. The Edema-Steernberg research program has a special focus on diet-related disparities, i.e. differences in dietary habits that are closely linked with economic or social disadvantages.
The postdoc is expected to draw on the emerging insights of the six different projects, conduct a literature review and a qualitative research study among nutrition professionals, so as to:
- answer the following questions:
- How effective are organized efforts to support healthy eating behaviour in groups with a lower socio-economic position and what factors explain their (in)efficacy?
- What moral goals (values) are being pursued in these efforts, consciously or not, and to what extent do they match notions of 'the good life' in groups with a lower socio-economic position?
- explore the possibilities for an integrative theoretical framework on nutrition disparities on the basis of these insights
- help set up a research centre "Nutrition Disparity and Equity", so as to support the objectives of the Edema-Steernberg Foundation for the longer term.
