Job description

The newly formed Department of Public Law and Governance of Tilburg Law School invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Jurisprudence. You would be part of the Jurisprudence and Legal Philosophy section, and contribute to that section’s teaching and supervise bachelors and masters theses in the fields of introduction to law, legal theory, comparative law, and legal philosophy (LLB Dutch Law, LLB Global Law, BA Liberal Arts, and various masters programs). Your research would relate to one of the department’s research programs: “Global Law and Governance” and “Modes of Law-Making and Governance in a Multi-Layered Legal Order.” We are offering an inspiring work environment with much room for professional development.

Requirements

We expect candidates to:

  • Have a law degree and a PhD in legal theory or comparative law;

  • Have several high-level publications;

  • Have a research agenda that lends itself to collaboration within Tilburg Law School in general and within the Department of Public Law and Governance in particular;

  • Have teaching experience, and, ideally, have experience coordinating courses;

  • Have a University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or be willing to acquire one soon;

  • Possess excellent communication skills and be enthusiastic about working in an international team;

  • Be fluent in Dutch and English;

  • Be flexible and take initiative.

 

In principle, the position entails 40-60% teaching, 20-40% research (depending on research qualifications based on publications), and 20% management.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

Tilburg University is among the top of the Dutch employers and has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment.The vacant position is for a full time contract but a parttime contract is negotiable if so wished. The contract is for 6 years. The starting gross salary for the position of an assistant professor on a full-time basis, ranges between € 3,637 and 4,978 per month based on scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) Dutch Universities. Foreigners and long-term Dutch expats may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The university offers very good fringe benefits, such as an options model for terms and conditions of employment and excellent reimbursement of moving expenses.

Department

The Department of Public Law and Governance is a large department with over a hundred staff members. It comprises constitutional law, administrative law, European law, international law, governance, jurisprudence, legal theory, legal philosophy, and legal history.
