As a research technician you are directly involved with the pre-clinical research on new stem cell sources of insulin producing cells, the role of Islets of Langerhans and the improvement of techniques to transplant insulin producing cells.
The LUMC is one of few centers in Europe where insulin producing Islets of Langerhans are isolated from donor pancreas’. This is done for islet transplantation in patients with type 1 diabetes and for basic and translational research. You will be a part of this research group and will be co-responsible for developing and maintaining several protocols. Experience with cell culture is essential (and with human pluripotent stem cell culture in particular is a plus) RNA/qPCR work, (immune)histochemistry, microscopy (confocal, live cell imaging), FACS and genetic modification of cells and lentiviral vectors. Regularly you will contribute to the isolation of islets for transplantation within a GMP environment.
We are looking for a motivated colleague who has finished a higher laboratory education (HLO) in Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences and/or Molecular Biology or something similar. You have an interest in basic and translational research. Previous experience with cell culture is necessary, preferably in humane pluripotent stem cells (hESC, hiPSC). Furthermore, you have experience with RNA/gPCR, (immune)histochemistry, flowcytometry, (confocal) microscopy and with viral vectors (ML-I and ML-II facility). You are accurate, anticipatory and a team player. A lot of the communication is in English. Therefore, it is important that you are fluent in English. You have to be aware that you will be working irregular shifts and are willing to do so. Hence, flexibility and a collaborative attitude are essential.
Fixed-term contract: min. 1 year.
You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment is for 1 year, for the duration of the project. The salary will depend on your qualifications and experience, with a maximum of € 3,099 gross per month based on a full time position (scale 7 of the Collective Labor Agreement for University Hospitals).
At the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), we are continually seeking to improve the quality of healthcare. The LUMC aims for excellence in patient care, research, teaching, training and continuing education.
Within the LUMC, the Department of Internal Medicine /Nephrology carries out basic, translational and clinical research on kidney, pancreas and islet transplantation. Specific basic research focuses on diabetes, transplantation immunology and vascular medicine. The lab collaborates strongly with groups in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology and the Department of Anatomy & Embryology within the LUMC as well as with the Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht and with the University of Maastricht.
