Job description

The research technician Organic Chemistry will support the (PhD) students and postdocs in the area of organic synthesis, updating electronic lab journals, safety management and handling chemicals, technical assistance in experimental chemistry and will have an overall lab supervision. This includes the responsibility for the regular maintenance and running of the existing synthesis and spectroscopic facilities and the purchase and installation of new laboratory equipment. The introduction of (PhD) students to novel equipment including synthesis techniques is part of the tasks. An active attitude in keeping up with new developments in organic synthesis is important. The technician will support the Stratingh groups of the National Gravitation Programme ‘Functional Molecular Systems’ and be based in Nijenborgh 4.

Requirements

- education in organic chemistry or related field at the hbo (university of applied science) level, or similar
- experience in organic synthesis and maintenance of synthesis equipment
- an interest in lab technology
- a problem-solving attitude and the ability to set priorities
- a self-propelling working attitude
- good communication skills, including communication in Dutch and English.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

The University of Groningen offers, depending on your experience, a salary of minimum € 2,835 up to a maximum of € 3,895 gross per month when full-time appointed (in accordance with scale 9 in the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). The appointment is initially for a period of one year. A performance appraisal will take place after 9 months, and if favourable you will be offered a 2 years extension. Within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the research carried out in the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry comprises organic synthesis, catalysis, chemical biology, supramolecular chemistry, organic materials and molecular inorganic chemistry. The staff of the institute has a main role in the education in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The institute comprises around 120 PhD students together with postdocs, and the fifteen research groups are assisted by a team of technical support staff. The Stratingh Institute for Chemistry is looking for a research technician Organic Chemistry.
