The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) invites applications for a Bioinformatician in the newly established Computational Support Team. This team is part of the Lab & Infrastructure Unit that supports our four research departments.

The bioinformatician is financially supported by the Research Priority Area Systems Biology of the University of Amsterdam. He or she will be part of the Computational Support Unit of IBED. The bioinformatician will set-up, adapt and evaluate existing software programs for the analysis of next generation sequence or omics data, and will guide and support scientists, postdocs and PhD-students from IBED with bioinformatic analysis of their (meta)genomic and (meta)transcriptomic data from micro- and macro-organisms in the fields of ecology and evolution. In addition, he or she will participate in teaching of undergraduate students and helps design relevant course modules. The bioinformatician will cooperate with bioinformaticians from the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) at the University of Amsterdam.

We encourage you to apply if you

• hold an MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics. BSc graduates with several years of relevant experience are also invited to apply;
• have demonstrable and ample experience with the analysis of (meta)genomic and (meta)transcriptomic data;
• have knowledge of microbial physiology and biochemistry is desirable;
• have affinity with population genetics and phylogenetics;
• have good programming skills in Perl, Java, and/or Python, and R; and experience with and affinity for working in a Linux environment;
• are able to work in a multidisciplinary research team.
• like to work independently on your tasks, and are also able to collaborate well with colleagues within IBED and the wider academic community. Good communication skills are essential for this position;
• are fluent in English and have adequate knowledge of Dutch or the willingness to learn the Dutch language within two years.

The initial full-time appointment (38 hours per week) is offered for a period of one year and will start as soon as possible. Part-time work is an option. Upon a positive evaluation of your performance you will subsequently be offered a permanent position. The gross monthly salary is in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €2,709 up to a maximum of €4,274 (salary scale 9 or 10), based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications and on the number of years of relevant professional experience, and will be supplemented with an 8 % holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3 %. The Collective Labour Agreement (Cao) of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED)

The newly established Computational Support Team of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) is part of the Lab & Infrastructure Unit that supports our four research departments. IBED is one of the eight research institutes within the Faculty of Science. Research in IBED includes Community Dynamics, Biodiversity and Evolution, and Geo-Ecology, and aims at a better understanding of the dynamics of ecosystems at all relevant levels, from genes to climate change, using a truly multidisciplinary approach. The Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam has a student body of around 6,000 and employs 1,600 members of staff, spread over eight research institutes and a number of faculty-wide support services. It offers eleven Bachelor's degree programmes and eighteen Master’s degree programmes in the fields of the exact sciences, computer science and information studies, and life and earth sciences.
