Job description

The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is inviting applications for a full professor in Analysis.

The research programme in Analysis at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute is subdivided into two groups: 1) pure analysis & dynamic systems, and 2) numerical analysis. For both programmes the current staff consists of one professor and two associate professors. The professor in the first programme will retire within two years.  We are therefore seeking a full professor in one of the many active areas in Analysis in a broad sense. Your field of research need not to be an exact fit with the topics described above, but it is desirable that a clear connection can be made with one or more of the existing research lines within the programme, and/or with other existing programmes in the institute.

In the Netherlands many important activities in analysis are organised on a national level. We are actively involved in these national efforts, for instance through the national research cluster NDNS+, being one of the four mathematics clusters funded by the national science foundation NWO, and by means of a joint analysis seminar with the Free University Amsterdam. We also contribute to the national programme Mastermath by offering courses in analysis on the MSc and PhD level.

You are expected to

  • be active in the fundamental and/or applied research of the Analysis programme, to publish in high-level international journals, to present at leading conferences, and to supervise PhD students;
  • carry responsibility for and to take part in teaching efforts of the programme, including supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, to teach in the national master programme, and possibly at other departments;
  • play a leading role in strengthening the coherence within the analysis programme, between the other research programmes at the KdVI and/or in the faculty, and to take part in the research activities of the NDNS+ cluster;
  • be active in the acquisition of external funding;
  • foster collaborations with other institutes and/or companies, and to contribute to (joint) research projects;
  • contribute to valorisation of mathematical research.

Requirements

You are expected to

  • have a strong research vision, and a track record of engagement within your department and across the wider mathematical community;
  • have an excellent track record of publications and research grant acquisition;
  • have a keen interest in pursuing excellence in teaching and in supervising undergraduate and graduate students, witnessed by positive evaluations;
  • be fluent in English, both written and spoken;
  • be able to teach in Dutch within two years after appointment.

Conditions of employment

The starting date of the appointment is flexible but should be no later than 1 September 2019.

Although the vacancy is for a full professor, the position is also open for promising candidates on an associate professorship (UHD) level. In that case a tenure track position leading to a full professorship will be offered.

The gross monthly salary of the Associate professor position (UHD) will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €5,039 up to a maximum of €6,738 (salary scale 13-14) effective 1 February 2019.

The gross monthly salary of the Full professor will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel and will range from €5,582 up to a maximum of €8,127 (salary scale HL2) effective 1 February 2019.

At any appointment level, the salary is based on a full-time appointment and depending on qualifications, expertise and on the number of years of professional experience. The total salary includes an additional 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus, under the  Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.
