The department of Business & Project Control of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) is looking for an 

Assistant Business Controller (1 FTE)

The department of Business & Project Control provides professional services to all RSM employees. It is a partner in the development and realisation of RSM’s strategy, and is responsible for enhancing the manageability of the organisation. It does this by controlling the use of resources (finances, capacity, purchasing) for education, research, support, and projects associated with RSM’s objectives.

The assistant business controller acts as the financial sparring partner for the department managers and project leaders within the organisation, plays an important role in the planning and forecast processes, and analyses financial and operational results and underlying trends.  

Your main tasks include, but are not limited to: 
  • advising on and implementing the school’s planning and control cycle

  • drafting the budget in collaboration with RSM heads of department and project managers

  • preparing periodic reports by collecting and presenting financial information, and preparing a comparative analysis for budgets (budget monitoring) for departments and projects

  • drafting the forecast based on actual figures and identified risks

  • advising, informing and supervising project managers on all internal and external regulations relating to external research funding

  • maintaining project dossiers and handling the final settlements in accordance with the subsidy conditions upon completion of projects

  • assisting in an accurate, complete, and timely closing of the accounts for each period

  • assisting in internal and external audit preparations

  • drawing up of business cases for new research centres or master programmes.

Requirements

Required qualifications: 
  • Minimum bachelor degree in a relevant field, for example business economics, accounting and control, or comparable.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a controlling department, preferably with a project controlling background, in higher education and/or in the public domain.

  • Knowledge of or experience with financial rules and regulations for national grants and Horizon 2020.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting, etc.).

  • Understanding of data analysis and forecasting.

  • Experience with SAP is highly desirable.

  • Good interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills; good command of both spoken and written Dutch and English (C1 level).

 Required competencies: 
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • High level of analytical skills.

  • A strong affinity with numbers and expertise in Excel. Experience with VBA is a plus.

  • Ability to communicate and liaise with colleagues at all levels within the organisation (e.g., department chairs and treasurers).

  • Results-oriented with the ability to prioritise under tight deadlines.

  • Strong teamwork skills.

Conditions of employment

Starting date preferably as soon as possible, at short notice. The conditions of employment comply with the collective labour agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). We offer a full-time contract, initially for one year.

Salary is subject to training and experience and may vary from € 2,709.00 to € 4,274.00 (scale 10 CAO NU) gross per month or €3,637.00 to € 4,978.00 gross per month (scale 11 CAO NU), based on a full-time contract of 38 hours.

Erasmus University hasattractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8 per cent, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3 per cent, and a generous number of vacation days.
