Job description

The Amsterdam Business School (ABS),  one of the two schools of the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Economics and Business, seeks to fill multiple positions as Assistant professor in Leadership & Management.

The new tenure-track Assistant professors are expected to strengthen the position of the Leadership & Management group by contributing to its further development. We are looking for ambitious high-potential candidates who take both research and teaching seriously and have published, or are about to publish, in top-tier international journals. Candidates with an HR analytics focus or a (quantitative) Organizational Behaviour focus are preferred, but candidates from other relevant or related subfields are also encouraged to apply. The position involves teaching in English at the undergraduate, M.Sc., or MBA levels, and potentially in the executive education programs. The Section Leadership & Management is currently responsible for teaching in the BSc. and MSc. of Business Administration, including thesis supervision, and also teaches in part-time and MBA programs. Further tracks and executive education may be developed in the future. We expect candidates to be excellent researchers and teachers with passion for teaching as well as research, preferably with teaching experience, an active research portfolio, willingness to actively participate in our research seminar series, visibility at major conferences, strong ties to the international research community, and with the willingness to perform service roles within the ABS and the field. Research time is 50% and allocated according to standardized faculty and tenure track procedures.

Requirements

To qualify for the position, a candidate should:

  • hold a PhD in Organizational Behaviour, Leadership, Management, HR or a related discipline (candidates at the very final stage of their PhD program may be considered for the Assistant professor position);
  • be well trained in research methodology (quantitative or qualitative);
  • have authored publications that appeared in international top-tier journals, or are about to;
  • have excellent teaching skills;
  • possess a relevant international academic network;
  • be enthusiastic about participation in teaching as well as broader research activities (e.g. seminar series);
  • be willing to contribute to the success of ABS as well as the active teaching and research culture of the section in service or coordination roles.

Appointees at the assistant professor level will be offered a tenure track position for six years. Upon meeting the tenure track criteria, a permanent contract as Associate professor will be offered. Salary will be in accordance with Dutch academic salary scales, include a pension scheme, and range between €3,637 to €5,656 gross per month, dependent on experience and track record of the candidate. A temporary reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

Amsterdam Business School

The Amsterdam Business School (ABS) is one of the two schools of the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Economics and Business. ABS has almost 3,000 students and the equivalent of 120+ full-time academic staff. Six sections (Accounting, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Finance, Leadership & Management, International Strategy & Marketing, and Operations Management) conduct research that is published in prestigious international journals. They also provide various degree programs including a BSc program and six MSc programs, a wide range of postdoctoral programs featuring several MBAs and an extensive portfolio of open courses and in-company projects. ABS has excellent corporate contacts within and outside of Amsterdam and utilizes these contacts in research and curricular activities. In addition, ABS opened its new behavioural research laboratory in 2016.

The offered positions are within the section Leadership & Management (L&M), which is currently home to around 15 faculty members, in addition to a number of PhD candidates and affiliated faculty. The L&M section focuses on teaching and research in Leadership and Management in a broad sense and specifically including the areas of Leadership, HRM and Organizational Behaviour as well as Research Methods.
