The Data Science Engineer works as an advanced technical lead within the Community of Data Driven Insights (CDDI) to contribute to the aim of the university to have most of the research data FAIR by 2025. This individual designs, develops, implements and continuously refines data warehouse architecture, data integration methods, scientific computing platforms and frameworks, analysis pipelines, user-facing applications, and end-to-end data flows.
The primary focus will be the development and maintenance of flexible data architectures and computing solutions. This position will work with the CDDI stakeholders, database administrators, software engineers, research staff, and scientists from the university and medical center, to design, deploy and maintain scalable and reproducible computing solutions over prioritized data assets with focus on Biomedical Imaging data. This includes, but is not limited to, building and deploying: ETL processes, modelling, data quality assessments, data tool\system administration, workflows and executable frameworks.
Position Description
Drive an agile-based approach to implementing data services and solutions to deliver value rapidly
Contribute to processes to collect and maintain inventory of digital assets across the enterprise
Design, direct and implement ETL processes, including data acquisition, data integration, data quality testing, data indexing and query answering
Build innovative data management, with real-time and predictive analytic capabilities
Work with colleagues from Maastricht University and Maastricht University Medical Center to coordinate the development of computing infrastructure tailored for the needs of CDDI
Follow trends and developments in the field of research data, linked data, data visualization, machine learning, text and data mining, etc.
Provide analysis and recommendations to overall strategy and roadmap to build data warehouse environment and supporting toolsets
Basic Qualifications
Work experience of IT platform implementation in a highly technical and analytical role
Customer facing skills to prepare discussions with senior personnel regarding trade-offs, best practices, project management and risk mitigation
Understanding of database and analytical technologies in the industry including massively parallel processing databases, noSQL storage, triple stores, data warehouse design, business intelligence reporting and dashboard development
Implementation and tuning experience for Apache Hadoop/Spark and tools such as Pig and Hive
Knowledge of one or more programming languages (Java, R, Python, Scala)
Knowledge of semantic technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc.)
Strong verbal and written communications skills
Proficiency of the English language
Proven experience in collaborative multidisciplinary teams
Experience with bio-medical imaging (MRI data)
Pro-Active and can work independently
Ability to deliver accurate effort estimates for work
Broad interest in scientific research and in the research process
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with XNAT platform and BIDS data format
Good command of the Dutch Language
Hands on experience leading large-scale global data warehousing and analytics projects
Implementation and tuning experience using cloud computing platforms and frameworks

The salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience between € 2.835,00 and a maximum of € 4.274,00 per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end of the year allowance.
