PhD in multinational distributed learning for personalized cancer treatment decision support
Maastricht University has a vacancy for a PhD student at the faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences in the department of Radiation Oncology.

Job description

MAASTRO’s strategic goal is to tailor cancer treatments to the clinical, biological and genetic characteristics of an individual patient so that the best outcome can be achieved. An important part of MAASTRO’s strategy is the research strategy Personal Health Train (https://vimeo.com/143245835) where artificial intelligence algorithms can be securely sent between multiple data centres to learn personalized cancer treatment decision-making models, without violating patient privacy.

Together with our partners in India - Tata Memorial Hospital, HealthCare Global Hospitals, C-DAC and Philips Research Bangalore, and MAASTRO Innovations BV in The Netherlands - MAASTRO has received NWO/MeITYy Indo-Dutch funding for a 4 year research project called TRAIN (personal health Train for RAdiation oncology in India and the Netherlands).

The general aim of TRAIN is to unite academic, industrial and clinical leadership to improve radiotherapy treatment for head-and-neck cancer patients using a fully distributed “Big Data” approach encompassing clinical outcomes, natural language processing and medical imaging. Data from top academic hospitals and cancer clinics around the world will be utilised to develop and test Clinical Decision Support Systems that aim to improve treatment and survivorship experiences of patients suffering from Head and Neck cancers.

In this project, you will be deeply integrated into a multidisciplinary team comprising clinical oncologists, medical physicists, software engineers and clinical data scientists to jointly build upon years of experience in Distributed Big Data, to unlock the richly multi-dimensional information stored in hospitals worldwide.
