Job description

The International Strategy & Marketing (ISM) department of the Amsterdam Business School (ABS) has a vacancy for an Assistant professor in Strategy.

We are looking for candidates who take their teaching seriously and have published, or are about to publish, in top-tier international journals, with visibility at major conferences and an active research agenda in the strategy field. We would especially welcome applications from scholars with an interest in behavioral research or technology and strategic innovation. We are particularly interested in ambitious team players who can help us further build our department and ABS more generally. A PhD in management or a related field is a requirement for all positions. The track record of candidates above the level of assistant professor should be consistent with the rank applied for.

Requirements

We are interested in candidates with clear expertise in Strategy who:

  • hold a PhD in Strategy (or be close to finishing);
  • have a clear research portfolio and preferably already (forthcoming) publications in reputable journals;
  • take their teaching seriously with proven ability in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • are ambitious team players with good ability to work individually and with a team.

Appointees at the assistant professor level will be offered a tenure track position for six years. Upon meeting the tenure track criteria, a permanent contract as Associate Professor will be offered. Salary will be in accordance with Dutch academic salary scales, include a pension scheme, and range between €3,637 to €5,656 gross per month, dependent on experience and track record of the candidate. A temporary reduction in income tax (equal to 30% of taxable salary) may apply to non-Dutch candidates. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (Cao) is applicable.

Amsterdam Business School

The Amsterdam Business School (ABS) is  located in the heart of Amsterdam, the cultural and financial capital of the Netherlands, which offers a cosmopolitan living environment with excellent connections to the rest of the world. Rankings by the Times (THES) and QS put the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in the top 100 universities world-wide. Within UvA, ABS offers executive, graduate and undergraduate programs in accounting, finance, management, marketing and strategy. ABS is triple-crown accredited (AACBS, AMBA, EQUIS). Most of the teaching takes place in small seminar-sized groups.

The International Strategy & Marketing (ISM) department currently houses around 40 faculty members, in addition to a number of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and affiliated faculty. Since the establishment of ABS, the ISM department has grown substantially, and we anticipate further growth in the future. The department’s research programme focuses on strategy, international business, and marketing in the broadest sense. A common, although not exclusive, interest within the department is the role of business in society. Digital business has become an increasingly important topic in both research and education and the department is now building capacity to address related issues such as digital transformation and its consequences for organizational capabilities, learning, and strategy, the broader institutional effects of innovation (such as market creation and transformation), network strategies, and business analytics. The department produces a steady stream of papers in internationally recognized journals, and members of the section have recently published in journals like the Academy of Management AnnalsAcademy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, Organization Studies, and Strategic Management Journal.
