Are you the researcher who will strengthen our team at the department Animal Health and Welfare of Wageningen Livestock Research?

The Department Animal Health and Welfare is an enthusiastic team of about 40 employees working on innovation, research and knowledge exchange. Many research challenges have an interdisciplinary character and concern major themes like animal welfare, transport, responsible livestock farming and animal health. The department works on welfare and health of cattle, swine, poultry and fish, and on smart livestock farming with sensor technology and big data analyses.
In livestock farming, data is becoming available more easily and in ever larger quantities. This data can be used for the management of the farmer, for the monitoring of well-being and health and many other applications: provided the data is converted into usable information for the end user.

Therefor we are looking for a new team member to strenghten our data capability. You will be working on:
  • Research, primarily in the area data mining.
  • Processing of data in different types of databases.
  • Knowledge of statistics, time series and machine-learning techniques.
  • Experience with different programming languages / environments such as MatLab, R.
  • Affinity with analysis of video data, audio data and spatial data
  • Affinity with animal husbandry.
  • Collaboration with several researchers within the department, private partners (industry) and end-users, researchers within Wageningen University & Research and from (inter)national knowledge institutes.
  • Contribute to the development of research proposals, papers and project plans

Requirements

A result-oriented and enthusiastic early-career researcher at MSc or PhD level, to work within our interdisciplinary team, where different animal welfare related projects are running.

Key features are:
  • linking data with practice: on the one hand to translate data to users and on the other hand to incorporate practical knowledge into calculation rules for the data
  • communicate with both end users and IT experts
  • experience with processing data in different formats
  • experience with databases such as MS Access, e.g. creating queries, or with SQL databases
  • interest and skills in quantitative data analysis
  • proactive attitude and good communication skills
  • fluent in English and Dutch language
  • key competences: pro-active, collaborative, flexible, client and result oriented

  • Depending on experience, the salary is maximum € 4.330,- gross per month, CAO Stichting Wageningen Research (scale 10) on full-time basis (36 hours). Together we will come to the exact job specifications. The appointment can be up to 36 hours per week.
  • We offer 171 hours of leave for a full-time position of 36 hours per week, with the option of accruing another 25 extra days (compensation leave) for a 40-hour working week.
  • 8% holiday allowance and a fixed 3% end-of-year bonus.
  • The arrangements for special leave, parental leave and sick leave are above average, as is the employer's pension contribution.
