We are looking for a highly-motivated researcher and teacher to complement current strengths in English linguistics in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam

Researcher, teacher, and coordinator for our bachelor's and master's programmes in English Linguistics and General Linguistics (including BA English language and culture, BA General Linguistics, MA Language in Society, MA Language in Education, rMA Linguistics). There will also be opportunities to teach in linguistics and language programmes in affiliated departments.

  Tasks:
  • Teaching classes in English in our and affiliated programmes: BA English language and culture, MA Language and Society, MA Language and Education, BA General Linguistics, BA Cognition Language and Communication;
  • supervising BA- and MA-theses;
  • working with team members to maintain and improve the profile and quality of our courses and programmes;
  • taking on administrative duties related to our programs, such as programme coordinator, the Board of Studies or Board of Examinations, tutoring students*;
  • contributing to the contemporary, interdisciplinary, and theoretical research of the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC) and also potentially connecting with the research strengths of the Institute for Language, Logic, and Computation (ILLC);
  • publishing your research in peer-reviewed journals and with academic publishers;
  • developing grant applications for national and European funding bodies.

*Some of these tasks take place in a wider context of the Faculty and require passive and active skills in Dutch. Candidates are expected to acquire the language within a 2 years’ period.

Requirements

  • A PhD in English, Linguistics, Psychology, or a related field;
  • a research profile that fits the priorities and approaches of ACLC;
  • experience and expertise in sociolinguistics, and an ability to teach this topic;
  • ability to teach in World Englishes from a linguistics perspective;
  • ability to teach in general linguistics programmes;
  • willingness to link teaching material to students’ studies in English literature;
  • ability to link between sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics approaches to language;
  • international recognition as a scholar as demonstrated by a record of regular, international quality, peer-reviewed publications;
  • track-record of research funding, appropriate to the career stage of the applicant;
  • strong organisational and cooperation skills;
  • proven research- and/or teaching-related administrative experience;
  • experience with PhD supervision and/or PhD examination is a plus;
  • native or near-native fluency in English;
  • willingness to learn Dutch (non-native Dutch speakers must be fluent in Dutch within two years);
  • willingness to undertake university teaching qualification (BKO) if not already acquired.

Conditions of employment

The appointment of the selected candidate will be based on the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (Cao) and on the Tenure Track Policy Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Humanities witch is under construction. The selected candidate will be appointed on a tenure contract in the position of assistant professor level 2 (UD 2) on a temporary basis for a period of five years, with prospect of a permanent appointment in the position of assistant professor level 1 (UD 1). In order to get a permanent position as assistant professor level 1 (UD 1), the assistant professor on tenure track is subject to excellent performance and is required to meet the criteria for the permanent position of assistant professor level 1 (UD 1) in five years. The tenure decision will be taken in the beginning of the 5th year. The appointment of candidates who do not achieve the required criteria for assistant professor level 1 (UD 1) will be ended after five years and will be supported in their search for a position outside the faculty.

The gross monthly salary in the position of assistant professor level 2 (UD 2) will range from €3,637 tot €4,978 (scale 11). The gross monthly salary in the position of assistant professor level 1 (UD 1) will range from €4,406 tot €5,656 (scale 12).

Faculty of Humanities

The Faculty of Humanities hosts internationally-leading teaching and research across a large number of disciplines in language and culture. The English section of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures comprises staff in linguistics and literature, with a contemporary focus on teaching English from an international perspective around the theme 'World Englishes'. The Department of Literature and Linguistics hosts an internationally highly-ranked General Linguistics section. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in internationally-leading teaching and research in sociolinguistics, will provide a link between research strengths in sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics in the English and General Linguistics sections, and will be willing to bridge teaching and research with English literature. The candidate will teach English linguistics from a World English perspective on our BA programme, will contribute to masters programmes in Language and Society and Language in Education, and to courses in the General Linguistics programme. Research in language at the University of Amsterdam is positioned within three interdisciplinary research centres: the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC), the ILLC (Institute for Logic, Language and Computation), and the ABC (Amsterdam Brain and Cognition Center).
