Are you interested in how climate change, sea-level rise and coastal flooding pose risks for current and future coastal infrastructure development and how this could impact the EU’s economy? Join our research group at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Job description

  • develop a detailed, high resolution database of critical infrastructure assets, using OpenStreetMap data, satellite data and other (open) data sources;  explore how this database can be integrated with open access data engines such as the Google Earth Engine
  • further develop the Global Tide and Surge Model, together with experts from Deltares, and simulate different coastal flood event for Europe, for different sea-level rise scenarios (including extreme sea-level rise of +3m)
  • combine the infrastructure database and the coastal flood simulations, and assess what European infrastructure is at risk
  • determine how failure of coastal infrastructure due to flooding can cause wider economic impacts to the European economy
  • publish results in international journals and finalize the work in a PhD thesis
  • contribute to teaching
  • present progress at project meetings and international conferences

Requirements

  • a Master’s degree in Hydrology, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Climate Science, Computational Science, Physics, or a related field
  • the preferred candidate will have knowledge of simulation models, programming (Python/Matlab), spatial data processing, and a broader interest in societal and economic risk related to physical hydrodynamic processes
  • strong collaboration and communication skills to work in a larger team of researchers from other disciplines involved in international research projects 

Conditions of employment

A challenging position in a socially involved organisation. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and amounts €2,325 (PhD) per month during the first year and increases to €2,972 (PhD) per month during the fourth year, based on a full-time employment. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The appointment will initially be for 1 year. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a duration of 3 years.

The department of Water and Climate Risk studies hydrological and climate processes, and how these processes lead to risks and opportunities for society, the economy, and the environment.
