Job description

We seek a highly motivated plant/crop research assistant. The position will include contributions to research (80%), teaching (10-15%), and general management (5-10%) tasks. The focus of the research function is: furthering the application of the state-of-the-art measuring equipment and data analysis for research on the physiology and the ecology of crops, (ii) supervising, monitoring, assisting in and coordinating experimental research of PhD and MSc students. Supervision and joint execution of experimental work of PhD candidates and MSc students is a major part of the job. Your contribution to teaching will be in assisting courses, mainly students' practicals in the area of crop science. The courses are at the BSc, MSc and PhD level. The candidate will develop, in consultation and collaboration with the existing technical staff and faculty members, her/his experimental skills that match the long-term strategy of the Centre for Crop Systems Analysis.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:
  • An HBO level in the area of plant sciences or agronomy.
  • Proven affinity to, and skills and experience in, laboratory, glasshouse and field experimental work.
  • Skilled in (statistical) analysis of experimental data.
  • Fluent in English, both orally and in writing; proficiency in Dutch is appreciated. This position requires a good English language proficiency (a mininum of CEFR B2 level). For more information about this proficiency level, please visit our special language page.
  • Developed interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Experience or willingness to develop the skills in designing equipment for future research projects.
  • Hands-on experience in photosynthesis-measuring equipment is a plus.

Scaling depends on knowledge, education, competences and relevant experience. We offer you a temporary contract for 12 months which will be extended if you perform well. Gross salary per month (scale 8): from € 2.579,- up to € 3.445,- Scaling depends on knowledge, education, competences and relevant experience.

This is a position within the Centre for Crop Systems Analysis (CSA), part of the Department of Plant Sciences, Wageningen University. The Centre is a federation of two chair groups, which are closely interacting in all aspects of their daily activities. The chair groups include Crop physiology, and Crop and Weed Ecology. The candidate will be a member of the Crop Physiology chair. Both chairs are strongly committed to excellent research and teaching providing the scientific basis for the development of high-quality plant production in sustainable agro-ecosystems. CSA focuses on understanding the functioning of crops from underlying physiological and community ecological processes. This is done through growth chamber, greenhouse and field experiments and computer modelling. The Centre for Crop Systems Analysis also seeks synergy with social sciences for greater impact of research and teaching.
