The Maastricht Multimodal Molecular Imaging Institute (M4I) and the Maastricht UMC+ DataHub are looking for a talented data engineer or scientific programmer who is interested in building next generation research data management workflows. You will ensure that research data from the M4I research institute will be further incorporated in the DataHub infrastructure according to the FAIR principles. You will work together with experts from the research domains to bridge the gap between academic research and the latest developments in (open-source) technology in research data management. Your work takes place in the context of the Netherlands Electron Microscopy Infrastructure (NEMI) (www.e-microscopy.nl). For NEMI you will work towards worldwide cross-institutional access to the DataHub infrastructure. Interested candidates can become enrolled within a M4I PhD program, working part time as data engineer and part time as PhD candidate developing and employing tools for the structural characterization of large macromolecular complexes in health and disease. The research of M4I Nanoscopy focuses on understanding the molecular machinery involved in the pathogenicity of mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Major duties

• Develop new technical solutions in federated authentication for the DataHub infrastructure to become available for external NEMI researchers;
• Develop new workflows for ingestion, aggregation and export of research data at M4I and NEMI;
• Extend the DataHub infrastructure based on new functional requirements of researchers;
• Primary contact for researchers at M4I dealing with research data management questions;
• Assist researchers with automated (meta-)data collection, conversion and enrichment;
• Have joint responsibility for system administration of Linux workstations and servers located at M4I.
• PhD candidate: conducting research in the structural characterization of large macromolecular complexes

We require

• A BSc or MSc in Bioinformatics, Information Technology, or equivalent experience;
• Experience with Linux;
• Experience with programming in Java, PHP, Python or other relevant languages;
• Being comfortable with working independently in an innovative and agile environment;
• Working proficiency in Dutch or English.

Preferences

• Experience with automation software and container technologies (Docker, Ansible, Jenkins etc.) is a pre;
• Experience with data management in a scientific environment is a pre;
• Experience with imaging, (electron) microscopy or mass spectrometry is a pre;
• Experience with the use of metadata and data standards (e.g., vocabularies, semantics, ontologies, linked data) is a pre;
• Being comfortable with open source technology.

Fixed-term contract: 1 + 3 years.

The Multimodal Molecular Imaging institute (M4I)

The Multimodal Molecular Imaging institute (M4I) is a state-of-the art molecular imaging institute that brings together a powerful palette of high-end imaging technologies. M4I is composed of the division of Nanoscopy, and the division of Imaging Mass Spectrometry. The division of Nanoscopy investigates cell structures at a macromolecular level.  The division of Imaging Mass Spectrometry develops and applies mass spectrometry based molecular imaging approaches for nanomedicine and biomedical research. DataHub provides research data management services in (medical) research. They are a cross-organisational community within Maastricht UMC+ and work on FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reuseable) data management solutions for researchers from both the academic hospital and the university. DataHub develops and manages an institutional repository for research data and enables researchers to store and retrieve scientific data in a sustainable and FAIR way.
