Advanced materials, materials applications and manufacturing methods rely on the fundamental understanding of the physics and mechanics of the underlying microstructure and the influence of complex processing steps affecting this microstructure, governing the mechanical behaviour of materials under various loading conditions. The development of this fundamental understanding requires bridging the gap between science and technology in the area of processing, analysis and design, through the use of novel experimental and computational tools. The experimental analysis, theoretical understanding and predictive modelling of a large range of problems in materials engineering involve different length scales, each of which necessitates dedicated experimental and/or computational tools. Predictive methods to coarse grain or homogenize from small scales to engineering scales are thereby of key importance.
Function integration in material systems
Conventional materials are endowed with a morphology and microstructure that is designed and processed up-front, and which is not purposely altered thereafter. Allowing materials to change morphology and properties over time (the 4th dimension) in a controlled manner, enables materials to behave as actuators or sensors, or to be programmable. This development can be extended towards designing and creating materials, i.e. designer materials, which are functionally integrated systems, i.e. the material becomes the system. This development is stimulated by ongoing material-driven miniaturization and function integration.
Development, optimization and behaviour of new advanced materials
Additive Manufacturing (AM) has huge potential and is widely advertised as the next industrial revolution, but there are still major hurdles related to the material's behaviour under the AM processing regime in relation to the desired functionality. This specifically applies to hybrid materials, which are key for the next-generation engineering materials, but also for combining synthetic and natural materials in soft robotics, wearable devices and implants.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the TU/e seeks to hire six (6) outstanding faculty members at all levels within the field of Materials and Mechanics and in particular the fields of Function integration in material systems and Development, optimization and behaviour of new advanced materials, which should play a leading role in addressing challenges and trends in the above-mentioned areas.
The department has a particular interest in candidates with a basis in one of the following subjects:
Candidates with an experimental profile are strongly encouraged to apply, even though some of the positions may be granted to scientists with a computational profile as well.
Candidates can apply to (tenure-track) assistant, associate and full professor positions and are expected to have knowledge on relevant application domains of mechanics and processing of materials. She/he should have the aspiration to contribute to the creation of a strong, internationally renowned research group, while fostering a collaborative network with other academics working on the topic within the department, the university and industry. The candidate should contribute to the progress in the field of mechanics and processing of materials, and to make major contributions to the fundamentals of new materials and manufacturing techniques.
The candidates will contribute to the existing BSc program Mechanical Engineering and the MSc program Mechanical Engineering within the department. The candidates will be supported in obtaining the University Teaching Qualification ('BKO'). Next to teaching, the candidates will guide and supervise BSc and MSc students with their graduation projects and PhD students under the projects in the sections Mechanics of Materials, Polymer Technology, or Microsystems.
Six (6) positions of 1.0 fte are financed by the Mechanical Engineering Department. The candidates will vigorously work on pursuing research grants from different sources, both national funds from the science foundation (TTW, NWO), but also European grants, including ERC grants. Experienced section members will guide younger candidates in writing proposals.
The candidate's group will strongly co-operate with existing groups in the Department, in particular the groups within the sections of Materials and Mechanics. Depending on the function level to which the candidate applies, the candidate's group can be embedded in one of the sections Mechanics of Materials, Polymer Technology, or Microsystems. The department fosters a personnel strategy stimulating personal growth towards faculty forming individual groups within larger coherent sections.
The candidate's group will be embedded in the Materials Technology institute (MaTe) within the University. The groups will also be embedded in one or more of the national research schools Engineering Mechanics (EM), Eindhoven Polymer Laboratories (EPL) and J.M. Burgerscentrum (JMBC).
