Duties of the Assistant Professor position will include teaching and supervision responsibilities within the department, as well as undertaking independent research.

Candidates have excellent teaching skills to contribute to the courses in the BSc and MSc programmes offered by the department, in particular courses in (Corporate) Finance, Introductory Statistics and Finance and Development, and including the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses.

Candidates have the ability to conduct original research and to publish in high-ranked international journals. He/she has a track record of high-quality internationally recognized academic research in the broad field of Finance and Development. The focus of the research will be on conducting field (preferably randomized-controlled trials) and lab-in-the field experiments in developing countries, in order to obtain rigorous evidence on the relevance of financial inclusion in developing countries. The scope of the research is broad and may include topics such as the impact of micro-credit, the importance of savings, the relevance and impact of insurance, the consequences of credit rationing, etcetera. A small part of the research will be linked to a global health project on the relevance of community groups in developing countries in terms of preventing non-communicable diseases. The research will be conducted under the direction of Professor Robert Lensink.

Requirements

To qualify, candidates should have:
• PhD in economics (preferred fields: Finance (and development), Development economics, Behavioral economics)
• teaching experience, preferably in Finance
• proven interest and ability in developing courses and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and in mentoring students
• a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or willingness to obtain this qualification
• experience in research in the broad field of Finance and Development
• experience in designing lab and/or field experiments
• excellent skills in econometrics/ statistics
• excellent writing skills
• knowledge of statistical packages (especially STATA)
• a strong interest in publishing in top tier economics journals
• the potential to generate external funding for research projects.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 60 months.

We offer a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,637 gross per month to a maximum of € 4,978 gross per month (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favorable tax treatment may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

The appointment will be for a period of five years. The percentage of research time will be 50%.

We expect candidates to start by August or September 2019.
