Leiden University, the bachelor programme Security Studies (BaSS) of the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Faculty Governance and Global Affairs, is looking for a Tutor/Lecturer in the Skills Labs of the BA Security Studies

Job description

The primary role of the new tutors is to teach first year students in the Skills Labs of the bachelor’s programme Security Studies (BaSS). In the Skills Labs students work on their study skills, deepen their substantive knowledge (in conjunction with the lectures), and learn and practice academic and professional skills. Throughout the BASS program students work on developing the following skill sets:

  • Academic skills: critical thinking, writing, communication, general research and interdisciplinary skills;
  • Professional skills:teamwork, intercultural skills, organisational and leadership skills, citizenship skills and reflection & lifelong learning skills.

Tutors in BaSS will have several tasks, a tutor:

  • Prepares and chairs Skills Lab sessions with students;
  • Has a role in the assessment of students and gives feedback to students;
  • Monitors the progress of students and facilitates to advance it;
  • Attends all lectures of the courses that are scheduled in conjunction with Skills Labs;
  • Participates in the meetings with the tutor coordinator;
  • Follows the tutorial plan of the Skills Labs that are co-productions of the tutors, the tutor coordinator and the course coordinators/core lecturers involved;
  • Is required to attend and participate in all mandatory tutor trainings and meetings;
  • Is an active member of the institute.

Requirements

  • A recent graduate or one or two years of relevant work experience. This is an early career position;
  • Basic knowledge of the study of safety and security issues and how they are studied within various disciplines;
  • Affinity with interdisciplinary and innovative teaching methods;
  • Demonstrate a high proficiency in English;
  • Display a passion for their subject area(s), exhibit didactic and guiding skills and be motivated to contribute to the development of students;
  • A team player, flexible, stress resistant and must take initiative;
  • Willing to work toward obtaining University Teaching Qualification (UTQ).
  • A safety science background and /or strong quantitative research skills will be an advantage.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be part of an ambitious and dynamic young team. He or she will work fulltime and will initially be appointed for one year with the possibility of a renewal for one more year based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 2.709,- to € 4.274, - gross per month (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The starting date will be 19 August 2019.
